Kakadone

It's been an intense few days, but I've arrived in Melbourne today. I flew down to Darwin on the 3rd on a flight from Bali. It was a two hour trip but an exciting one as I was going Down Under for the first time. It was a short flight but I got chatting to the person sat next to me on the flight, an Irish girl called Denise who had been spending 18 months so far in Australia on an extended working holiday. She was heading to Darwin to try and get some work, and we had a good chat. I landed in...

Darwin

Having passed through Darwin on our arrival in Australia we knew enough to use the free int**net in the airport to book our hotel on arrival. Don't ask me why we don't book things furth** in advance but we don't. Anyway the Cavenagh was cool, right in the centre and we got a good rate on the int**net too so happy days. Darwin seemed like a great place. It's the first big town/city h**e that isn't ridiculously sprawled out and ev**ything is v**y central which makes life v**y easy. Th**e are pl...

Nature & Culture Explorer In Darwin

It was rainy season when we visited. Alice Springs was flooded and made travelling there near impossible. Fortunately, we didn't miss out on the Kakadu Park trip, which was spectacular. This was our first time chartering our own private jet for an hour up in the skies exploring the amazing terrrains of Kakadu. Darwin is a tourist-friendly destination, especially so for back-packers and budget travellers like us. All tours and information could be obtained from the visitors' information centre...

The Mother of all Road Trips

Our new gide was a friggin' hippy. He wasn't much of an advance on Spinner in the height or looks department but had dreadlocks that I could sufficiently check from above for signs of headlice - a test he passed. He also had the craziest little laugh that was really quite sweet...when it didn't remind me of a serial killer, that was. His name was Justin but we called him J. Yes, he was that cool. He also had a tendency to walk around on baking terrain absolutely barefoot and drove the bus san...

Living in a Tupperware Box

When you're a backpacker the prospect of a free meal is impossible to turn down. Even if it does involve you wandering around a strange city for miles in a humidity that's a little like walking in a giant Tupperware container where someone left the hairdryer left on. Darwin itself is a very cosmopolitan city that surprised me. There's plenty of development by the harbourside where trendy apartment blocks are jostle for space with sleek office buildings. I checked in at a hostel in Mitchell St...

Everyone leach free?

KT: We almost missed the flight to Darwin (always read your itinerary) we presumed it would be a domestic flight but it was actually going on after to Singapore so therefore an international. We were at the wrong terminal! Not the only ones mind you. With 15 minutes to check in we made it. Steve also gets stopped at security and they check his bags for explosives using a special wand and machine. He is a dodgy looking character! The flight to Darwin was pretty quickand we got to see great vie...

Farewell to Australia

KT: With only 1 day left in Oz we couldn't quite believe it. We spent our last day pretty much doing odds and ends in preparation for our flight to Bali. We did however have a wander round Darwin, at the Esplanade and tried to avoid the crazy Aborigines. There were a number of big groups who just hang around the town. After an exciting few days in Kakadu it was nice to relax. I've really enjoyed being back in Australia. It is crazy revisiting a place you have been to before so long ago, howev...

Sweating my ass off

Well, I flew from Cairns to Darwin, landing at about 10 pm local time, and didnt immediately notice any difference between the weather Id just left and the weather here. Then I woke up the next morning and walked outside! Holy cow! I dont think Ive ever experienced such a hot and humid day. Especially at about 10 in the morning. I wanted to go out and explore the city, and I did, but it was not a pleasant time. After I'd gone down to the harbor and walked along a little pathway, I decided my ...
