Sydney to San Francisco, via LA... with three-year-olds! Highlights: 1. The plane had blankeys; 2. The cuteness of Phoebe and Blake sitting together in one seat sharing earphones and watching Mickey Mouse (lasted for about ten minutes but fun while it lasted); 3. They slept a little bit, but the rest of the time were really good (I'm sure the other …
My Lonely Planet California suggests that travellers avoid Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, tourist trap that the area is, in favour of the more cultural San Francisco experience of galleries, museums and trendy cafes. Clearly the Lonely Planet author has never travelled with three-year-olds. We wandered down Polk St this morning towards the bay. Or …
Today we'd planned on taking a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, but due to a bit too much sun yesterday and not enough sunscreen (it had started off 15 degrees and overcast, so we didn't realise we were getting burnt!), a day in the shade was in order for the Allen clan. So we put off the cycle until tomorrow, and instead opted to enjoy the …
Drove from Fresno to San Francisco today, an easy 5 hour drive.
On the way through Madera we passed a market, so had to stop. All the signs and prices were in Spanish - wish we had Josh with us to translate! He stayed in the car - funnily enough he wanted to play on his laptop instead of shopping...the stall holders all spoke Spanish …
Got up late today, so only had time to go into central San Fran and look around before going on our 1pm Alcatraz trip.
We passed the Boudin Bakery and noticed the items in the window, bread baked into shapes like a huge alligator and lobster etc - very cool.
We went to Johnny Rockets for an early lunch - a 50s style diner. Great food and …

Clean, centralish (not walking distance as advertised though), breakfast a bit slim on it, but rates are good and has parking for all rooms.
Having issues with wireless cutting in and out, looking at previous reviews this is an on-going problem...really annoying.

Historical Traveler Reviews Castle Inn San Francisco
SF Visitor Center -- Highly recommended
We arrived in SF and visited the visitor center to help us plan our stay. Obligated to do so, they made several suggestions for accommodations, however, they strongly recommended Castle Inn based upon the excellent feedback they receive from their prior visitors. We decided to take their advice and, let me tell you, we loved it.
Everything was great from the room amenities, to the staff, and to the excellent location. We felt at home and 'cozy' at the Castle Inn. Our stay made our entire vacation very enjoyable and we thank the visitor center for sending us there.
What a great place to stay.
We spent five night in the Castle Motel in November this year and I had to log onto this website to say how great the place is. The rooms are immaculately clean, spacious and the facilities were great> The coffee machine, microwave and fridge mean that you can easily eat cheaply in your room and is also great for those hungover mornings. The complimentray breakfast was a god send and I muyst recommend the Breakfast claw.. a personal favorite of ours.
The owners of the hotel are probably the most friendly that I have had the pleasure to meet and eagerly helped us with just about everything.
the location was ideal, not more than ten minuites walk to Fishermans Wharf and easy access to buses serving the financial district and the famous Castro and Ahight districts.
I heartily recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a relatively cheap, clean and friendly hotel.
Never been treated better!!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to tripadvisor. com. I selected the Castle Inn for my first trip to San Francisco from this site. The rooms are nice and have a lot of amenities (love the mini fridge where you can actually fit something in the freezer!!) and the location is very central and safe, but what sets this place apart from any place that I have travelled is the front desk staff. Varsa and Cy (I hope I spelled that right) were never to busy to help (and I had a lot of questions).
I don't know if they read this site, but thank you for all the helpful hints and the great guide on bus numbers but most of all thank you for caring enough to ask how my day went when I came down for hot choclate in the evenings.
Loved the Castle Inn
The Castle Inn is a wonderful and affordable place to stay in San Francisco. It is close to cable car and bus lines. Free parking is offered. The rooms are very clean. The hosts are friendly and most helpful. There are many affordable places to eat right around the corner.
Enjoyable stay at the Castle
The staff of the Castle Inn is extremely friendly and knowledgeable.
Prior to arrival, I corresponded by email with a very diligent and competent employee named Varsa who not only booked me a room without incident, but also suggested and booked me on a fabulous city/Alcatraz tour with hotel pick-up. Upon arrival, the Castle Inn was all that she had promised and more. Great location near cable cars and restaurants, spacious bathrooms with glass shower doors, comfy beds, and cheap sodas in their vending machine. The best perk of all was the free covered parking spot guaranteed to each room -- a must have in SF. Overall, I was very pleased with my experience and recommend this quaint hotel to others.
Loved the Castle
I came to San Francisco late summer and stayed at the Castle Inn for 1 week. I've been all over the U.S. and by far, the staff at Castle Inn is the greatest. Varsa, the front desk person was the lovliest person i've met during my travels. I've traveled through 21 states and she is the only person who worried about us and made us feel like family. She was so helpful in making our stay in S.F. a great one! The location is also close to everything and the rooms were lovely. TWO THUMBS UP!
Great Stay at the Castle Inn
The Castle Inn is a great place to stay if you are visiting the San Francisco area. The cable cars are close by. The rooms are nice. The staff are wonderful ...very, very helpful with suggestions for dinner and places to go. My husband broke his tooth and they called around for dentists till they found one who would take him...just a great stay...we had another couple with us who stayed in another room and had a great experience there as we did. It is a no frills, clean, reasonable wonderful place to stay . Highly recommend
Great motel in a good central area
Marshall and Arlene are the people to help you find your way in San Francisco. Good size rooms, well kept and all the amenities you need.
Good area with lots of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops starting within ½ block, your car is not needed to get about from from this motel -unless you want to go outwith the central area ie between the Wharf and Union square. Four of us enjoyed our stay here. Chris, Glasgow
Great treatment at Castle inn
Castle Inn was a great location for touring all of SF. Based on the advice of the desk clerks Arlene and her husband, we purchased a 3 day bus pass(good for the bus and cable car) and got rid of our rental car.
Since the hotel was only 50 feet off of Van Ness, it was very easy (four blocks to the cable car start) for us to take either the cable car to Union Sq. or the bus down to Fisherman's Wharf. This was a great move and one of many fantastic suggestions they had for us. If not for their advice we would not have seen several interesting sites or known how to get our sold out Alcatraz tickets at regular price or eaten some of our better meals at the restaurants they suggested. The room, though not spectacular or huge, was clean, nice, quite, roomy enough for two adults and two kids and maid service was excellent.
If you want a place to sleep so that you can easily get around and see SF this place was great.
Very Good Location
The Castle Inn is located right in the middle of San Francisco, which makes it very convenient to a lot of areas. The rooms are not fancy by any means, but are clean and acceptable. The concierge was extremely nice and helpful. The motel sits in the heart of one of SF's neighborhoods so there are many coffee shops and restaurants, including a very good Thai restaurant less than a block away. The walk to Fisherman's Wharf is pretty easy and there is a main bus route just three blocks away. Parking is free and covered, which was a great perk.
If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay, but not a lot of amenities, it's a good choice.
