    ... but they can never do justice to something like this. Most come back sometime and explore it close up - a trek would be ideal!

    Later on in the day we pass through Monument Valley - another awesome place of *********e mountains left in place after surrounding rock has been eroded away over the years. The shapes (monuments) were incredible - hope the photos do them justice!

    I am sure that by some measures there must be more remote spots in the Lower 48 states, but I still consider Silverton to be near the top of the list in terms of hard to get to. Silverton is an old mining town in the midst of the San Juan Mountains that's a shell of its former self during the mining heyday of the late 1800s. Nowadays the town has only a few hundred people with a handful of others scattered in outlying areas of San Juan County. ...
