... a camp site on the way down to the beach but missed the turning on the way back. I pulled into the next lay by to plug into Satnav destination for another site, when a lady in a Cherokee Jeep pulled up and asked if we were looking for a camp site, turned out she was the owner of the site we had just passed. So off we went following her and we ended up in the Blue Heron camp site situated rite on the end of the peninsula. Really nice site ...

Whangarei, North Island, New Zealand deanandmichelle... the seals, we caught our supper (I caught 12 sea perch in the space of an hour....not bad for a first timer hey!?), we traced out the constellations perfectly in the pitch black sky, we marveled over the dolphins first thing the next morning......what a trip! I honestly didn't think I'd be able to top it.....but I was wrong! From Te Anau I went to Lake Wanaka just to pay a visit to the infamous cinema, with its homemade cookies, ice cream and sofa seating and I ...
Matakohe, North Island, New Zealand cielo... Then it's over and the cars start moving again. We found directions to our hostel, which was a bit out of town up the hill a ways from the Whangarei Harbor. So we made it up the winding drive and found a little sign on the side of the road for the Little Earth Lodge. It was a steep driveway down to the lodge itself which was in an idyllic setting among the hills and cow (and of course, sheep) pastures. It was also a small "farmette", with ...
Whangarei, North Island, New Zealand rgreenwell630... before reaching a sandy sea floor. the islands also receive an offshoot of the East Australian Current, so are bathed in warm water making it an ideal breeding site for many species of fish. many of the subtropical fish living in the reserve are found no where else in New Zealand. the Poor Knights sit about 13 miles offshore and it took us about 50 minutes to reach the reserve due to some large swells. some of the other people on the dive trip didn't quite expect swells ...

Punaruku, New Zealand dirkmarta... sea cave in the world and then passed through a couple of enormous limestone rock arches, all of which were very impressive. After passing weathered rocky outcrops, we had a second dive through a submerged arch, again with lots of fish. A good day out. Norah had decided to stay in the quiet harbour area and enjoy an easy day meandering round the bay in the sunshine, the first one for a while where we had not been travelling.
Tutukaka, New Zealand harryandnorahWe decided to fly in from Wellington to avoid the Easter traffic and having to take all the time driving. We took a 737 flight to Auckland and then hopped on a 16 seat turbo prop for the short jump up to Whangarei. I've got to say flying in New Zealand is so much more pleasant than the US. You don't have to nearly strip and they seemed pleasantly surprised when we had the laptop taken out of our bags for security in Wellington. For the short flight, there was no security at all ...
