Alcatraz - Home sweet home?

A travel blog entry by nadyapb

We didn't get too many attractions in today, but the ones we did see were quintessential San Francisco - Alcatraz and Coit Tower.

We started our day with a tour of the infamous former federal prison just off the shore of the city. The boat ride there took 10 minutes at most. As soon a we got off, we saw an Alcatraz sign that had "Indians …

Vineyards to cable cars

The castle winery that captured our imagination the day before did not disappoint. It was a bona fide 13th century Tuscan castle complete with drawbridges, towers and a moat! 14 years in the making, it was a dream come true from a 4-th generation wine maker from the Sattui faimly, whose original vineyard we visited the day before. We toured the …

Good morning San Fran and what miserable weather. Still feeling a little worse for wear. Hard to tell if it's jet lag or from last nights cocktails. Either way, out the door and off to pier 33 to pick up our tour to Alcatraz. It Rained pretty ******* us so paid $8 to jump on a bus that only took us two blocks further and then terminated! So back to …

Fishermans wharf

Finally got to San Fran after dealing with the terrible LAX airport. Landed here at 11am and hit the ground running. Straight out to Lombard Street's zig zag road and fisherman's wharf. "Jet lag my ass" we said! But then it hit us, those streets are so steep we were knackered after walking 5 blocks, so we had to come back home and take a nap after …

What can we say..... Wine tours are always awesome and ones in the Napa Valley are no exception! We met a couple of Sydney guys, Luke and Michael (or Marco as the Americans know him) and bonded straight away. Napa Valley is a beautiful area, like Margs but hilly. The $10 for 3 tastings was a bit steep (yes, I meant that pun)! Dan making a Wilson- …

    A lovely hotel

We found this hotel neat and clean, not very big and car park was small but staff very helpful.
There was a laundromat around the corner and it was a 5 min walk to the bus stop to catch the bus to anywhere we needed to go.
It was an easy half hour walk to fisherman's wharf and we did this a few times - even with young kids.
Warning though to those wanting to walk up the road to the 'crooked' part of lombard street - that final hill is a killer unless your super fit :) But well worth it!
Views from the tiny balcony are gorgeous and you can see the Golden Gate bridge :)
Would def recommend it here and would def stay there again

Historical Traveler Reviews Buena Vista Motor Inn San Francisco

    Loved the Buena Vista

    from anonymous

This place was great. It was clean, the staff was helpful, we were close to all public transportation. The neighborhood was very safe. We stayed 3 days and had a great time!

    Very pleasant!

    from anonymous

we stayed 2 nights in july. the staff were so pleasant and accomodating. the environment was clean, fresh. for those with the ability to walk a little it was well worth the value. i also enjoyed the fact that we were close to some neighborhood businesses that were less touristy. for us, it was the best for the price! i would definitely return.

    Wonderful stay!

    from anonymous

We stayed in Buena Vista Motor Inn in San Francisco for 3 nights in June 2004. We were met by a surprisingly large double room, with 2 queen size beds and plenty of space for 2 large luggages and walking around the room. The room is clean and quiet. The toilet is big with a bath, very clean with plenty of towels for all 4 of us.

Our stay was made more pleasant by the friendly staff who gave us directions to access local amenities. The hotel even microwaved our packed food from the supermart for free! Internet is available at the lobby and the first 15 mins is free of charge. None of the hotels we visited in USA provided that service or free for that matter!

We needed a can opener to open a canned soup and the staff was nice enough to ramage through their drawer to lend us one for free. Continental breakfast is also provided at no separate charge. although special menu is available at a reasonable charge.

The free breakfast was a pleasant surprise to us because we didn't know that breakfast was provided when we reserved the room.

For a city that is hard to find parking space, the free hotel parking was definitely the deciding factor why we booked that hotel.

We are also happy with the security of the hotel which required our room key to get into the hotel from the parking level.

We will certainly go back to Buena Vista Motor Inn again if we visit SF in future.

    Good recommendation for all travellers.

    Loved the Buena Vista!!

    from anonymous

We stayed here for part of our honeymoon, and couldn't have been happier!! Because this was our honeymoon we didn't want to stay at any big-name, impersonal hotel chains, and this place was perfect! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the location is close to Fisherman's Wharf, which is where we spent most of our time. We also loved the charming decor of this hotel -- especially the lobby and the sun room on the 3rd floor. We didn't find the Buena Vista noisy at all -- quite the opposite. We can't recommend the Buena Vista highly enough & would never consider staying anywhere else in San Francisco!!

    Curse that convention!

    from anonymous

Unfortunately tried to book a hotel last minute from UK and discovered the mother of all conventions was taking place in SF, hence not great deal of choice at reasonable price. Ended up here which in retrospect wasn't the best choice, its just compared to other places we stayed the buena vista was a bit average really. Staff were fine, rooms Ok but the location on Lombard st meant it was very noisy plus of course we got a room at front and as hotel was full couldn't swap. Also full hotel means lots of people stomping around all night (we love a party but after a 12hr flight and jet lag, drunks toppling over in the corridor isn't that great) Staying here wasn't the end of the world and despite the noise the location coupled with public transport meant good base for SF. We stayed a couple of nights and were happy to move on. On our return to SF ended up at the ARGONAUT which ironically was a bit cheaper (curse that convention!)

The Buena Vista stands out in our minds.

    from anonymous

We visit San Francisco twice a year. This May we're returning to the Buena Vista for the third time. We've stayed at more expensive hotels and a few that are comparable in price, but the Buena Vista stands out in our minds. It is well located, is an excellent value, and the free parking is a plus.

    Fabulous

    from anonymous

We lost our lodging for a recent trip to SF and stayed for 5 nights, 2 rooms, at the hotel. It was excellent! Staff were very helpful, rooms were very spacious and very clean. Only problem I encountered is that there was no where to eat in the hotel, or microwave something. And we were charged for a refrigerator ($25) when they said we could just get one as we'd rented two rooms for 5 nights. I was charged anyway and the attendant would not refund the money. But at any rate, I will stay there again for sure!

Good value for a great location

    from trishmat

Got a good deal from this hotel over the phone, was told the rates and when I said I would ring back they gave me discount to book it immediatly! Good location, and free parking. Staff were very nice and you can go online for free.No bad points except no where to get breakfast in the hotel if you were not in the mood to go for a walk in the mornings!

    Great find, Great location

    from anonymous

We stayed here the first time we stayed over in San Francisco and have never stayed anywhere else. It's always clean and is very cozy. The lobby is very nice and the sun room on the 3rd floor is lovely with great views. The staff has always been stellar. Its location is ideal.

If you choose not to drive, the bus system and walking work great. We recently stayed over July 4th weekend and walked to and from the fireworks on the Pier. The price is right too, especially when parking is free and underground on the premises.

    Very Pleasant Stay

    from anonymous

Stayed here in June with our family of five. Staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. Room very clean. Easy for us to walk to catch the cable car and Fishermans Wharf. We would definately return to the Buena Vista when back in San Fran.
