That night I slept a little better as I had inserted ear plugs and couldn’t hear the various noises a desert full of campers make. Plus, I wasn’t worried about middle of the night marauders. ... to our plan to see some sunset and early morning sunrise, as now the prospect of sleeping in the car was looking quite real. Neither of us fancied that, although the back seat looked alright. So having driven through it, we abandoned Death Valley and took the advice of the innkeeper to head to the nearest town - Ridgecrest a mere 70 miles away.
As we headed toward Ballarat, we entered Searle's valley and passed through Trona (seemingly the main town in this area) and all the little and all the surrounding towns like Argus, Westend, Pioneer Point etc. To give you an idea of how backward it is out here, the train tracks turn round at Pioneer Point, although it's more likely that it's because there's nothing of any consequence any further east and if you go much further you hit a ...
... but the food section on this one was tiny so we just got plenty of bread and sandwich fillings, water, sodas and snacks that we could eat whilst we went through Death Valley the next day. That Wal-Mart was a strange place, I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone there seemed to be crying inside.
