Long and safe transit to Sydney is complete. I was able to sleep for about 6 of the 15 hours. My kindle, music and ample in-flight tv/movie options helped the time pass relatively quickly. It's 9:30am on Sunday, 72 degrees and mostly sunny. My Flight to Christchurch is tonight at 7:40pm. The travel coordinators set me up with a temporary Australian visa so that I can leave the airport and see some of the city rather than spending 10 hours in the terminal. Love to ...
... a hotel was found! Yay! With fake grateful smiles to undeserving Mr Deadbeat, we clambered back into the ute and hit the highways again to another welcoming hotel. It was now after 1am. This time, we didn't even see the guy's face (probably better that way). We spoke through a tiny grill in a window with one-way glass. Yes, a booking agent called. No, she did not make a booking. After a little cry and running 10 kilometres up and down, in and out of the airport I decided I wasn't letting this ruin Day 1. I jumped into a shuttle taxi with all my luggage to Santa Monica ...
... the swimming pool. 33 deg C here, stifling heat, quite humid. The staff were helpful and very accommodating.
Very quiet night, probably best sleep so far. We headed back to JFK driving through NY City, thank goodness in a taxi, cost $89US and took 2 hours from Jersey City because we drove through Manhattan and traffic was diabolical!
Our hotel was a basic airport hotel, good beds and quiet, the start of waiting begins. Had to be at airport ...
