    ... and the stone, flags, and flowers that mark the crash site.

    Although the memorial has been constructed for a while, a new visitor center is due to open later this year. They are installing a walkway from the visitor center, through a grove of newly planted trees, and over a pedestrian bridge to the site. We hope to go back again in the future.

    ... to the wall of names carved in Marble. The Marble wall as well as the new Visitors Center is constructed along the flight path to the point of impact. At that point of rest, there is a large sandstone boulder that is original. There are 40 groves of trees being reintroduced into this large meadow. This was an area that had been strip mined. The sacrifice of these individuals leaves one speechless and in tears. ...

    4 hrs, 6.1 kms Day totals: 17 hrs, 31.1 kms Actual date: May 28, 2015 I continue on south, up over a ridge and through the forest, to another much smaller valley. which consists of some farmland and open meadows... and a big trailer park in the middle.     ... typical Urban America! It doesn't seem that Altoona was ever a big draw for African Americans fleeing poverty and segregation in the south.

    I head back into town, going up one street and down the other. I will admit that the main cathedral is pretty impressive--and looks even moreso from a distance when you don't realize it's high on a hill.

    Then I come down 11th street and... well... OK... It does look like some work has been done on ...
