Nanaimo
We only had one night in Nanaimo, a smaller town north of Victoria. We explored a little on the first day, walking down by the harbour in to town. It's nowhere near as nice as Victoria, but we didn't see very much of it. After dark we saw some harbour seals messing about near the pier on our walk back home. Second day we went for high tea by the …
FAIRWELL TO NANAIMO
... THAT'S A LONG TIME, BUT IT SEEMS JUST YEARS AGO WHEN JOANNE WAS YOUNG AND BILLY WAS COURTING HER. I CAN REMEMBER THE ONE PARTY AT 413 MARJORIE ST. WHEN I WAS ALL OF 11 OR 12. THEY HAD ROLLED UP THE RUG, JIVE MUSIC WAS PLAYING AND EVERYONE WAS DANCING! THERE WAS A MICKEY HIDDEN IN THE BACK OF ...
HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
TODAY WE WERE GOING TO GO YARD SALING, BUT JOANNE'S SON RICK SAID HE WAS GOING TO COME FOR THE DAY. SO WE WENT TO THE AIRPORT AT NOON TO PICK HIM UP.
RICK BROUGHT US 2 OF HIS SON'S HOCKEY JERSERY'S AND OUR SONG FOR TODAY WAS "THE GOOD OLD HOCKEY GAME". WE HAD PICKED UP 2 HOCKEY STICKS FROM THE $ STORE.
WE WENT IN FIRST AND DID OUR SONG AND BILL WAS CRINGING AT OUR SINGING. THEN RICK CAME IN AND SURPRISED BILL. HE WAS THRILLED. RICK ...

... the last photo of the sun as it started over the horizon of Spain. It promised to be another hot day. It was kind of fun flying into Amsterdam as we had left there on July 2. I pointed out the huge roof of Centraal Station as we approached the city. It brought back pleasant memories of our week in Holland.
Our stop over in Schiphol was about 3 hours, time enough for Debbie to find a bag of fresh Holland tulip bulbs that had to be purchased. It was fun ...

... Bay and the ferry to the island. So even beyond Planes, Trains, and Automobiles to include Ferries as well - have to sample the full range today (oh, and I walked from my flat to the train station - wonder if I might be able to cycle to my mom's in Nanaimo to really put the finishing touch to the day!).
Okay, now to some writing time... What I like most about airport lounges and long flights!

Loved the Buccaneer
What a great place to stay!! We were greeted by Dave and Marlene and their "pirate" of a son Christopher and were made to feel welcome from the start. It was as if we were life-long friends. My wife and our three young daughters enjoyed the room that the suite afforded us especially after 5 days in our camper. What a wonderful break to sleep in such comfortable beds and in our own room. There is no better to wake up than to complementary Tim Horton's coffee. We were planning on taking the ferry of the Island the next morning so Dave checked the ferry schedule for us and brought it up to our room. When we checked out in the morning Dave had already gone on-line and checked the traffic at the ferry to see if it was crowded for us. We are already planning next years' trip back to the Buccaneer.
Extremely clean and affordable
My brother was here visiting for Australia, and he wanted to visit Vancouver Island. We stayed AT THE bUCCANEER iNN, Nanaimo, and I was astounded at the level of cleanliness and value for the price. We stayed at similar 5 star places in California at three times the price!!! We were also given a detailed summary of points of interest near-by, with directions from the Inn. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Nanaimo.
Buccaneer Inn is even better now!
We stayed at The Buccaneer Inn a few months ago and it was great. We just stayed again and now it's even better!
They've repainted, redecorated and refurbished all the rooms. They've added down duvets with comfy covers, maple furniture and original metal art by a local artist. They even have samples of Nanaimo bars in their office! This place just keeps getting better and better.
Dave and Marlene work hard to make sure you have a great time in Nanaimo and throughout Vancouver Island. We can't recommend it enough and look forward to going again back soon!
1 Day in Paradise
We spent only 1 day in Dave & Marlene's Bucaneer Inn, but, it was the nicest day of our vacation. The place was immaculate, super comfortable and almost like being at home. Our Hosts were so helpful in advising us what to do/where to go. They set us up with a snorkel with the seals adventure, which was the most memorable event of our vacation. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone planning a trip to Nanaimo or Vancouver Island. It was our starting point (right off the ferry) for our travel southbound through Vancouver Island to Victoria.
What a wonderful place.
We stayed in Nanaimo at the Buccaneer Inn. Wow. Don't let the exterior fool you. This place is QUALITY. Everything was squeeky clean. We had a kitchen unit with all the ammenities you'd ever need. At night the rules were enforced and it was utterly quiet. Everything worked. And most of all, Dave, the owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. He spent much time directing us to the local activities and restaraunts, showing us where to go on maps, and generally informing us on everything from diving, to current sailing races. to bugs and snakes in Japan. Quite enjoyable! His personal touch was gracious and so helpful, as well as entertaining..

Great rooms, relaxed setting and very friendly hosts
I stayed at the Buccaneer Inn based on previous reviews from this site and I can honestly say that I wasn't disappointed. The owners are very friendly and always willing to go out of their way to ensure your stay is as pleasant as possible. Thanks again for a wonderful stay and I'll be back soon.
Only choice for scuba divers in Nanaimo!
This weekend we came to Nanaimo to dive (totally great place to dive!) and stayed at The Buccaneer. We've stayed at other places in Nanaimo but trust me this is the place we're staying at from now on! It was fantastic!
Dave and Marlene have thought of everything for divers. The place is well maintained (it's not brand new but is in great shape) and very clean. They've put a lot of thought into catering to divers. There are two heated gear rooms & a place to rinse your gear. They even give you cool dive stickers to put on your tanks but we still bought some of their great shirts and hats.
The suites have kitchens, ensuite bathrooms, a living room and a view of the ocean. The parking is free and in front of your room (easy to get your gear in and out). The inn is across from a Ocean Ex, 2 pubs and a couple of restaurants. All easy walking distance! It was quiet, the beds were very comfortable and we had a great sleep.
Can't wait to come back, dive the wrecks again and stay at The Buck! Keep up the good work guys!
What a great place!
Our family just loved the super clean suites at The Buccaneer! The separate bedroom let us have some privacy from our kids. The kitchen helped make our holiday more affordable. They even had a basket of games, puzzles, books and cards in the room for our use. And there was another basket of food and sodas in the fridge. Oh and a real kettle, teapot and Earl Grey!
The owners were really friendly and had lots of interesting travel stories to tell. The Buccaneer is right on the water and you can walk along the Seawall to downtown. We will definitely stay again and wanted to let others know this is a first rate place!
Cleanest place I've stayed in!
The Buccaneer Inn is the cleanest place I've ever stayed in! The suites are comfy, immaculate and the beds are super comfortable. Nice view of the water and with the bedrooms at the back of the inn, had a great sleep. They have lots of info including daytrip itineraries. The owners were really friendly and they run a great ma and pa operation. Will definitely be back and strongly recommend The Buccaneer Inn to others!
Had a Great Sleep at The Buccaneer Inn
We really enjoyed The Buccaneer Inn. It all started with the warm welcome, Dave, Marlene and Christopher gave us! The Buccaneer is in a great location across from the water and Seawall and in the neighbourhood of a bunch of restaurants and pubs.
The suites are newly redecorated and are very comfortable. The beds are super comfortable. The separate bedroom and kitchen worked out really well for our family.
We would definitely stay again and would recommend this motel to anyone looking for spotlessly clean accommodation at an affordable rate in Nanaimo.
