Climbing Stanley's Nut?

We rented a car for the week to get around. We had a Hyundai Getz, a cute little zipper. It was automatic as well so we could share the driving responsibilities. We followed the Great Nature Trail along the northwestern short of Tasmania. We stopped at the Table Cape lookout. The scenery is gorgeous and the beaches look amazing; the sand is so soft and white. We stayed in Smithton, past Stanley. It actually was a really nice motel called The Bridge. They didn't really have good cooking facili...

Phillips Penguin Parade

... fish and chips on the sea front we drove to the penguin parade. Every night the islands large colony of penguins make there way from the sea, across the beach and into their grassy nests. It was very cute watching the penguins waddle across the beach, sometimes running back if they got scared and sometimes falling over from going so fast. After that ...

The Charge of Penguin Brigade!

... would say I was driven by love for Heidi) and however much I scrubbed and rubbed, she just wouldn't shine. But matt white is better than grimy grey I guess and after all if the Melbourne bunch are as flippant as the Brisbane bunch then they won't care anyway. In fact I reckon she's a lot cleaner now, than when I picked her up!

With lunchtime approaching, and the park virtually empty, I headed back over the bridge to San Remo to see the pelicans being fed. This was a little ...

Day 42)

We awoke at the Seahorse Motel and set out to explore the rest of the island that promised to check koalas off of my “things to see” list. We went to a park they have built for them that is complete with elevated walkways that take you eye level with ...

Day 3 - Phillip Island

... you can follow their journey.  Some cross the road and go into the car park, some have burrows on the other side of the entrance road.  Our taxi driver told us that at night, the entrance road is closed to traffic to protect the penguins.  You can't take photos here, so you really have to see the penguins to understand how amazing this is - every night, on time, this parade happens, and they almost seem oblivious to us humans wandering beside them, oohing and ...

Phillip Island, land of the little Penguins!

... Penguins at a time & waddle up the beach together. They put on quite alot of weight when they are out catching fish, sometimes they can come back 1kg more than they weighed before they left which, when they only weight around 1kg to start with is quite alot. It takes them quite along time to waddle up the beach, they only have little feet & fall over quite alot. They definitely seemed a lot more agile in the water than out!

LOOONG Day

... diana). But its all so expensive down here. Even with the favorable exchange rate, ice cream is like 9 dollars (ASD). So, i just got some cookies and cream- not many flavors...and just to let you know, the ice cream down here is no good. it tasted like the cheap strawberry kind you buy at walmart. must be the cream they use or something. big dissapointment. Some more people finally got to the hostel..got to go....

The Great Ocean Road

Hello, I just thought I would let you know how our trip The Great Ocean road from Port Fairy to Geelong went. Nick and I were very lucky with the weather as it held out all week until we were in Queenscliff - the rest of the time although it was cold and a bit dull at times we were able to see all the spectacular natural feature of this coastline. Including the Bay of Islands, the Grotto, the Arch, Loch Ard Gorge and the Twelve Apostles. On Wednesday afternoon ...

... by the rangers/researchers studying the penguins. Once the penguins have come ashore, you can walk back to have a peek and see if you can see them in their burrows. They are very vocal when they're on land, so it's a special treat to see them waddling through hill and dale, and squawking away at one another. The animals in Australia are pretty amazing, and seeing them on t.v. or in photos does not prepare you for seeing live ones. It's all pretty special!

Phillip Island

... We went out of the centre and along the boardwalk down to the beach where there were 2 large concrete stands (almost like being at a stadium!?) We walked down to the front of one of the stands and waited. After a while we moved to the sand (sitting down) to get closer to the gap between the 2 platforms (the ranger had told us this was where we would less see the birds going by). We waited and waited. The sun set. The ranger welcomed us, and then suddenly a group of 15-20 penguins ...
