    Shasta in the clouds

The plan for today was to see Mount Shasta in all of its beauty, on our way to Redding, CA. So, we set out at 8:40 AM and 64 degrees with overcast skies, hoping that the clouds would lift and give us that spectacular view. Unfortunately, the clouds came down instead. We had rain off and on…not a downpour, but just enough to keep the windshield wet. Since we would not be in Shasta until afternoon, we still had ...

Monday, July 20, 2015. PCT day 92. Miles 1476-1501.8 Today was a 25.8 mile day. I started by 7:30 am and got done by 6:30pm. I even spent about 2 hours for lunch and swimming. So I have a confession. I made a promise to myself to swim in every possible river or swimming hole possible. I am happy to report that I have been swimming every day for the past 3 days. It has been very warm lately, so swimming in any creek or river is always amazing. The creek that I swam in today ...

... I got to McCloud river and campsite here by 16:30, 9 hours from where I started at 07:30. I did the first 15 miles without stopping for water or food. I just kept on going. Since the water sources were still spread out the first 10-15 miles today, the trail seemed packed today because the water sources were full of hikers. The trail was very forested today, and when the canopy did ...

... is 10 miles away, and then after that another 10 miles. We didn't feel like hauling so much water. So we decided to camp at the next water source (Moosehead Creek) and settle for 20 miles today. Tomorrow there are more water sources, so we can easily do 25 miles. The PCT hikers that I saw today are Dino DNA, All good, Etch-a-sketch, He-man, Spontaneous, Sarge, ZigZag, LoneStar, Humpit, CC, Topper, BearCan, TooMuch, Sinbad, and MintyFresh. Yes, the trail was crowded ...

... us for a little longer before heading north to where it begins at the lake/dam near Whiskeytown. Where would you want to live in CA with a neat town name...WEED, COOL or WHISKEYTOWN??

Midway in our trip to Redding the landscape changed. Gone are the tall green trees and lush ground covering and back is the rockier hills, brown grasses and short trees and of course HEAT. We got a few more quick views of Mt. Shasta on our way ...
