... the fall, others that she was lost to the waters and her spirit can still be heard at the falls.
But for us most of the entertainment came at the hostel we stayed at, some 18km east of the city. The couple that run it were warm and friendly, and had set their home up as a hostel in a commune like way. We only stayed 2 nights, we decided to take a room for the first and tent up on the lawn the second night. This proved to be a ...
... driving, making it to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park by late afternoon and camping at the beautiful, spacious and wild, Marie Louise Campground. (While the camping fees charged by Canada’s Provincial Parks are slightly more than those of U.S. National Parks, the sites and facilities are of better quality and better maintained, in my opinion.)
The presence of the Sleeping Giant (a massive rock ...
... I hope it is good.
The food was amazing. The restaurant was Finnish and known worldwide. You know it’s good when there’s fried liver on the menu!
After we ate our weight in pancakes, eggs, French toast, and sausages, we headed off for Kakabeca falls. They were really cool. We were throwing sticks and stuff over the falls and laughing like drunk loons. We liked the falls so much my Dad talked to Mrs. Ranger to arrange a 1 night stay.
When we were ...
Today was a day off from driving. We decided that it would be nice NOT to have to move too much today, to give Jen a rest (which seems to have worked - her back is much better!), and to take a look around Thunder Bay. For history buffs, on Jan. 1 1970 the two cities of Port Arthur and Fort William amalgamated to form one city, the city of Thunder Bay. The current population is about 110,000. We did some chores this ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada coventry_kid... were several Voyageur re-enactors. They were wearing toques and ceintures flechees just like we used to wear! It was fun to see them there. We stopped and talked to a man and a woman about the fort. They were welcoming us and suggesting things for us to do when Mireille appeared from behind us. Immediately, she started to speak in French, and the two re-enactors switched to French as well. Oh well, at least we had a few minutes of English! She told them that we, too, were ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada monchemin... of lifting a canoe over their head was surprisingly elementary. I couldn't believe that the men responsible for taking a dozen young boys into the wilderness didn't even know the method of picking up a canoe for a portage! I said, "Il y a toujours une system, tu sais..." (There's always a system, you know... (Voyageur inside joke, forgive me)). Our distraction quickly ended, though, because we were hungry and breakfast was waiting. Food is the law. We all sat down in the gravel ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada monchemin... some great bruises from getting knocked around. Nancy and Judith were not feeling to well by the end of the day.. apparently realizing they can get seasick... I was thinking it was a result of them eating all those mushroom quiche. Over all a great day we were out for 6 hours on the water... got some great views of the sleeping giant and the peninsula. We ended the night at Nancy and Robs for some grilling. We had some of the most devine ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada haolegirl... the day ... the parking areas were full and people were wandering all over. The further north we drove, the less leaves we saw. We had already seen the leaves pop in Winnipeg and Regina, so it wasn't that Canada was behind in the arrival of spring. Lake Superior's cool breezes slows everything down. There was a green blush to the forests so it won't be long before we ...
Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada beverlyks... Well, we didn't see it. Another road sign points us towards the amethyst mines in Panorama, which sounds curious, so we give in and take a little side trip. We are given a tour by a funny little man in a hard hat and rubber boots, who tells us through his megaphone that our sandals are not recommended footwear for touring an amethyst mine, as the amethyst is like glass and could cut right through to our feet. Yikes ...
