We continue to make our way east, next stop the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan to the city of Marquette. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the most populated city of the UP. Note: the entire UP only has a little over 311,000 residence. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, primarily for shipping iron ore (see picture below of train dock), and is the home of Northern Michigan University. In town we saw T- shirts and signs with "Yooper" ...

A few miles into Michigan means EST, but at least Michigan roads are better that WI and MN! Thunderstorms here definitely get our attention..and rain!!! Yikes...puts Oregon to shame! The Northern Calumet and Keweenaw Peninsula revealed the first hint of fall colors on the tree-canopy over Hwy 26. Log trucks were loaded with maple ...

... in downtown Marquette . . . right on the harbor. Parking was a bit of a challenge, having to park on a pretty steep hill, and cross a steep street, but we managed. The restaurant was not crowded when we arrived, but by time we finished, it had a waiting line--and they are so new . . . they do not have their license to serve alcoholic beverages . . . nor is there elevator (they are on the second story of an old building) been inspected for ...

      ... jolt!!

During lunch, the clouds got lighter and the sun got brighter. There are several pull outs and scenic viewing opportunities on the drive between Munising and Marquette . . . and we stopped at most of them! Lake Superior is crystal clear!

We also spotted two sandhill cranes. I turned around so Carol could take some pictures of them. When I turned around to head west again, there was a third crane. I photographed them again from ...

OK we're back in the 21st century and have wifi again. Who knew there were places in northern Wisconsin that don't have Wi-fi! We are in St. Ignace Michigan, " yooper" country as the locals are called, meaning those rednecks that live in the northern peninsula and those who live in the southern peninsula of Michigan are called trolls. I guess you have to visit these areas to know these facts. The Mackinac Bridge connects south to north and is the longest suspension bridge in ...
