A little after an hour an the road today and we made our first stop at
    Presque Isle Park in Marquette.

We took the first parking circle off to the right and walked out on the
break wall. Except for all the tiny insects, it was a nice walk. I'm
    constantly amazed at ...

Day 21, dehydration followed by a slow death is imminent. Skin is textured like parchment and almost translucent, lips cracked and bleeding, eyes are sunken..... If we drink, we have to stop and pee...... Just kidding, our wonderful, patient driver is awesome about stopping whenever we ask. I have driven a few times, but I am not aggressive enough for some of the roads we have travelled. My dear husband attempted to pull the wool over my eyes yesterday by ...

Leaving UP, MI just in time

A travel blog entry by mountaingirlz on Jun 30, 2015

After a nice long sleep in our tent in Hiawatha Natl Forest of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, we are on the road again, and just in time. We missed the rain by about 20 minutes. It raining now, with no hopes of clear sky in sight. It's a perfect driving day to get more miles behind us. We are now at 1103 miles and GPS says 467 miles to go! Mara and are getting a chuckle out of UP MI convenience store supplies....about a dozen different kinds of whiskey ...

We continue to make our way east, next stop the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan to the city of Marquette. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the most populated city of the UP. Note: the entire UP only has a little over 311,000 residence. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, primarily for shipping iron ore (see picture below of train dock), and is the home of Northern Michigan University. In town we saw T- shirts and signs with "Yooper" ...

A few miles into Michigan means EST, but at least Michigan roads are better that WI and MN! Thunderstorms here definitely get our attention..and rain!!! Yikes...puts Oregon to shame! The Northern Calumet and Keweenaw Peninsula revealed the first hint of fall colors on the tree-canopy over Hwy 26. Log trucks were loaded with maple ...
