Today was a long driving day, and nothing much happened, but we made some new friends. Most of the day was spent looking at the view in the picture entitled "Mostly what we saw today". If you look closely, I think you can see the Statue of Liberty in the background. About an hour out of Albuquerque, we came upon a parade of 11 vintage Porsches. We found out later, at a rest stop, that they were meeting another Porsche Club for a rally. Great fun, and beautiful cars. We turned South mid-mornin...

We woke up early on the 4th to do a zip line eco tour. Nothing like getting dressed up like a construction worker and flying through the trees at 9AM to get the day started. In all seriousness, we had a fantastic time and had two fantastic interesting female guides. One was on Survivor and the other is about to take off on a nomadic journey to South America. Really interesting and fun people, easy to trust with our lives/safety. Just a side note here, I hate doing group ...
Fort Stockton, Texas, United States chmielewskij... enclosed a photograph of a typical Pemex station. In Mexico there is only one company selling gasoline, and they are well staffed, very clean, and found everywhere. I stopped at a vendor at the side of the road with an incredible display of the copper pans of all shapes and sizes. If only I had room to carry one home. I filled up one more time with cheap Mexican gas, and then converted all my Mexican paper and coins into American. When I arrived at the border crossing I ...
Fort Stockton, Texas, United States jstephenscaToday was an excellent day as it was only cool this morning as I pulled on to the highway. I had a couple of interesting experiences on the highway today. I was behind a large flatbed truck with a load of thousands of chickens in cages and the feathers flying off were so amusing. I was also behind a trailer with about twelve cows and I was very happy to pass them as I am never sure what surprise "gift" they might spray or drop on me as I follow ...

Fort Stockton, Texas, United States averynet... in the office offered to give me a taste and popped over to the café and came back with two bottles and two glasses. The c******nay was good! I bought two bottles and headed back to the RV with my find. A wine tasting in the middle of the Texas prairie in an RV campground, definitely a first. We went into the local grocery store and they sold the wines as well for a very ...
Fort Stockton, Texas, United States pfl_guyWell today was interesting. As usual my idea of getting off early didnt happen. When I was fianlly able to pack the car up with all our stuff (granted, I know that my bag of skate gear, maybe wasnt necessary, but it was a necessary evil) and I went to start the car and it was dead. You heard me!! DEAD. Seems the kids - while as good as they were in cleaning out my ...
Fort Stockton, Texas, United States litton03Carlsbad Caverns to Fort Stockton is an area that would be better navigated by autopilot! Actually the road was fine but the view.....yuck! And the cross-wind was brutal. Granted, it is late-winter/early-spring when weather is often an issue and vegetation is dormant so maybe the landscape and weather has greater appeal at other times of the year. Yeah, right! We stayed at a bright spot on the horizon...Fort Stockton RV Park, with friendly ...
Fort Stockton, Texas, United States warnoutAfter the fun times in San Antonio and visiting the Alamo (which only reminds me of PeeWee Hermans Big Adventure and finding his bike in the basement) We were back in the car to trek across the rest of the width of Texas...along the way we took a bunch of pictures of the landscape and sunset. We got to Fort Stockton around 8:00pm and found the Cheapest hotel around which was the lovely Budget Inn. We pulled up to our room ...

Briefly, some other interesting things about the caves - (1) when first discovered, they found piles of bat guano more than 80 feet deep in places and used to mine the stuff; (2) the cave formations grow about 2mm per 10 years; (3) they reckon it was formed through a chemical reaction between the sulfuric gas found in the area and ...
