... a saturday most of the shops didnt open till around 1030-11am and it was 9am. We headed for the i-site, an information centre and found a 'hot deal' on some of the activities in this area.
The first place we went to was Te Puia which was a place with lots of thermal activity! From mud pools to geysers. While here we watched a Maori show too but it was ruined by too many japs taking too many photos! Think there ...

... most active volcanic area in the world. Truly enjoyed the thermal areas. Hope you enjoy the pictures. We went to a Maori Hangi while in Rotorua. The Maoris are the aboriginal peoples of NZ. They are covered in tattoos. Their faces are covered and these tattoos tell a story. The warriors arrived in a boat and then presented a Maori war dance. The meaning of the tattoos ...

Mini road trip

... I know I'll get the chance to do it again. We did see the very beautiful Huka Falls though - have never seen water that colour, it's a beautiful bright blue - so we didn't totally waste the day. We headed back to Auckland that evening and straight out to a free concert in The Domain - think Proms in the Park on a smaller scale. There were a few new people to meet - Amy, Tony's girlfriend, Amy's brother Will and Tony's friend Simon - Simon had arrived from England while we ...

... of singing though. After that we walked through the town park and saw all the boiling lakes and pools of mud, we didn't have a car or the money to go and see all the touristy geysers and stuff but saw all we wanted to see. On the way home we picked up two giant t-bone steaks reduced to $5 (less than 2 quidfor both) and BBQ'd them while all the other backpackers ate their pasta with tomato ketchup on.

... Andy, and I played cribbage for awhile before going to bed. 10/30/08 This morning I woke up at 10:30. Nobody was in the house at the time because they were already busy trying corral the sheep because today was sheep shearing day. Andy and I agreed to help. I was quite excited having never assisted in anything dealing with farms or sheep. The local sheep shearer named Paul arrived at around 11am. The we eventually corralled all of the sheep into the lower ...

... into them again along the way as ost backpackers follow the same route. I got to the station around 12.45 for my bus at 1.15 and who should I bump into but another guy from Northern Ireland. He was from Derry and just heading up to the Bay of Islands before going to Thailand for 5 months. Nice guy. The bus journey down here to Rotorua was just over 4 hours long. I was kept entertained by my ipod as the other (few ...

Day 11: All Around Rotorua

... terrible safe and secure exploring down there, even with the provided hard hat.

The regional history wing had some amazing Maori carvings and photographs of some of the significant individuals at different times. A couple of the women pictured were strikingly beautiful. There was also a exhibit dedicated to the "Maori Battalion" of WWII, and equally as interesting a section dedicated to the eruption of Tarawera in 1896, to ...

... Maori songs. Then it was time for dinner, we ate traditional food cooked in a Hangi, a ground oven - it was really good, I even tried mussels, they were not good. On the way home every nationality had to sing a song from their homeland - then we got driven round a roundabout a million times singing "she'll be coming round the mountain" - well until the police put a stop to it! It was a really good day - am heading to Taupo tomorrow

... amounts of beer for incredibly little money. Pahia is in the beautiful Bay of Islands where you can cruise around in a boat and go through the terribly tacky "hole in the rock" in a boat. We missed out and rather went to Waitangi which marks the site of the historical signing of the "Treaty of Waitangi" in 1840 betwen the English Crown and over 500 Maori chiefs giving the Queen sovereignty over New Zealand and at the same time guaranteeing land rights to the Maori ...
