... WWI and propelled by the concern of military planners, an Army expedition was mounted to test how difficult it was to drive across the country. The expedition included Major Dwight Eisenhower who was recently returned from service in WWI. The journey took 62 days and claimed nine of the 79 vehicles in the convoy. Twenty one of the 276 expeditioners were also lost along the way. The journey had a profound effect on the young Eisenhower.

It was a very rainy summer day in Spokane as we waited for our flight to depart at the airport. We made our usual pit stop at the airport Starbucks before heading to the gate.
