... WWI and propelled by the concern of military planners, an Army expedition was mounted to test how difficult it was to drive across the country. The expedition included Major Dwight Eisenhower who was recently returned from service in WWI. The journey took 62 days and claimed nine of the 79 vehicles in the convoy. Twenty one of the 276 expeditioners were also lost along the way. The journey had a profound effect on the young Eisenhower.

It was a very rainy summer day in Spokane as we waited for our flight to depart at the airport. We made our usual pit stop at the airport Starbucks before heading to the gate. We boarded the plane in Spokane only to have to "deboard" and then "reboard" the same plane. Apparently a last minute plane swap confused the seating arrangements which required a second try. ... marks the 137th anniversary of that battle. It really makes me sad to think the choices that our ancestors made. The kids completed their Jr. Ranger program. This was their 5th, with more to go after Vancouver. We drove for 11 hours today. We are pretty sure this is the longest day of driving we will have on the trip.
