Sunshine Coast!

... we arrived in AU my 27 year old cousin Dylan picked us up. I noticed that AU was extremely hotter than NZ. When we got back to the car my cousin realized that he had lost the keys because there was a hole in his back pocket we had to look all over the airport and we finally found them. After that fiasco we drove a hour and a half to their town.On the way I noticed how dry the land was and how few ...

Second leaving Week 2 – 43 kms, $9.20 fuel

... C******nay, Champagne and beer. It was a great catch up with these older hash friends.

We intend to stay here until Monday morning. There are a few walks that we would like to do, some canoeing and some well and truly deserved R&R. I haven’t seen any kangaroos around here yet, but I hope a mob passes through one night.

We're all going to the zooo tomorrow

... the zoo's stars – it's wildlife! We started our day with a koala photo, which happily snoozed away on each new person as it was passed along the line for the photographer, and then headed off for our leaping lemur experience which we'd pre-booked before arriving.

Again the joy of low season worked in our favour as the only two on the experience we were whisked off to the outer reaches of the zoo by a friendly keeper. The keepers are all ...

... at High River. June 7 - Frank Lake The main birding site today will be Frank Lake. Target birds at Frank Lake include White-faced Ibis, Franklin's Gull, American White Pelican, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Black-necked Stilt, Ferruginous Hawk, Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow and Le Conte's Sparrow. In the late afternoon, for a ...

Daytrip to Redcliffe

... strokes. Okay, perhaps that's a bit of poetic license, but the water was very nice! Refreshed, we drove on to the Redcliffe jetty: a weird looking construction with a sheltered rotunda midway and two mooring appendages jutting into the bay. A human made breakwater forms a protective sheath around the point of the jetty, providing a safe haven for watercraft. Our last stop before heading back for Brisbane was the red cliffs of Scarborough ...

Wanker is not a dirty word

... Whitehaven beach (pictured). I'm told this place gets pretty busy during high season, and there is a drawback that you can't just hop in the water (boxfish stingers will get you a free helicopter ride and put you on first name terms with your insurers), but it looks and feels far better than any picture can justify. It is particularly famous for the uniquely white silica sand and the daily shift of the beach with the tides. Worth a visit. There are plenty of day trips out ...

First Days in the Far South

... My first day, finding myself surprisingly rested, having flown on a half-filled flight and stretched out asleep across an entire row of seats for the duration, I was shown downtown Caloundra, a smallish city center with uncrowded, tree-lined streets and an impressive array of international cuisine and kitsch stores normally resigned to larger cities.  Jane, Neil, and I stopped in at the DMV so Jane could get her new Australian driver's license, and then we had lunch at ...

Surfing and wrestling crocs - all in a days work!

Our last night in Yamba was spent watching "Narnia" in a little wooden shack with fold away chairs that is their local cinema. $6 a ticket and $2 a bag of popcorn and I was laughing!! The film was ace but made me super homesick!! (long story). So, the next day we drove through Ballina and Lennox Head on our way to Byron Bay. We called some places in Byron and were told that due to the time of year they were fully booked and the prices were all double ...
