First rainy day - Abel Tasman NP

The city of Nelson was quite nice. We checked out the Saturday market, got something to snack on, but didn't find any crafts worth noting. B2 finally got a hair trim, which was much needed, and then we were off to Abel Tasman National Park. The drive through Richmond, NZ was probably the first place we have not liked so far in NZ - it was tough dudes w/big trucks and everyone seemed rude and in a hurry... We made it to Matueka, which is the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park - the info ...

... our next tramp) goes thru many...many vineyards, a few sheeps and cows. The flat valley and surrounding foothills remind me of Napa Valley, a young wine region making its footprint in the middle of a very agricultural country. The sun is still au rendez-vous to show the beauty of the Southern Alps. Massive moutnains covered with pine trees, a few glaciers far away, few farms, noone around...a sensation of remote wilderness that does not exist to that extent on ...

Weather's improving!

... We shall try again another day!
After checking out we headed into Nelson and had a good walk around, buying a fistful of books for over the next few days. Another stop at a supermarket to load up on a few essentials and we headed to Nelson beach. What a beautiful day, we couldn’t believe that at 12.30pm on a Saturday the beach had barely 20 on it!! What bliss! We had lunch and then I read while Em walked down to the sea and along the coastline. What a gorgeous afternoon we had.

... which turned out to be a good thing since they already had a fire going in the little stove, letting us pass out in warmth.

The third day was much better, shorter at about 14 km and with easier terrain. It started with an estuary crossing at low tide. We had to cross several streams running through the wide stretches of sand, so we took of our shoes and rolled up our pants. The water was amazingly cold; it felt like I dipped my feet in freezing fire. At one ...

I won a prize for a question related to New Zealand and won a voucher for 6 free drinks, free food and photos for Queenstown. In the evening Lucy, Chanelle, me and some other people watched Wimbledon (Federer Vs Karlovic) in the tv room.

... warn the town's residents of the raising waters, it was like being in a war zone. It was still raining hard and it looked like our sanctuary "The Pub" might be at risk too. Many businesses and homes where already flooded but the rain started to ease off and the waters began to subside. I'm sleeping tonight in the pub car park. Just hope the road is open tomorrow so I can get to Nelson and Picton to catch my ferry to the north island. It's certainly been a crazy day!!
