- On our way to Las Vegas after going to San Diego, we stop by in Baker, CA to get gas, ice, and snacks.
- Gas was $47.44
- Snacks were $12.76
- Ice was $7.50
- We stop by McDonald's where I got 30 McDoubles. I knew they were loaded with perservatives so they would be fine to eat at any time during the trip. The 30 McDoubles cost $30

After a few hours driving we pass through Tonopah, a rather old and strange looking gold rush town and turn south on Hwy 95. We turn off on Hwy 374 at Beatty towards Death Valley, but before we leave Nevada behind and re-enter California we stop at the very eerie and deserted Rhyolite ghost town. This was apparently a hurly-burly boom and then bust western ...

... was another ghost town right near Barstow called Calico. We decided to take a look and it was a proper old mining town. Glad we went when everything was closed as it was set up for tourists with every building trying to sell you something. It was just missing the tumble weed.

So we carried on to Baker. The gateway to Death Valley and 90 miles from Las Vegas....and only one motel open which stank of mucky water and cheap bleach. We walked ...
