Nice apart from the unusual whistling sound that occurs in Barstow when it's windy. Although thats not the hotels fault at all

So yesterday we entered our final state, California.

In the morning we headed down to Lake Havasu as there was a Speedboat festival going on, honestly it was Speedboats everywhere! Pretty impressive to look at, hundred of high powered boats just parading up and down the lake and the river. Real nice weather and again something completely …

... dry. The road through the pass was interesting - great views at times, lots of roadworks. There is an horrific drought here in California. It was great to turn off the freeway into Victorville - and along the old Route 66 to our motel in Barstow. Just outside Victorville, we passed Jean's Holland Burger Cafe, home of the Brian Burger; but we were still too full from all the food on the Qantas ...

Tiny little place looking exactly as it probably did a hundred years ago, with ramshackle old shops and a pub or three, but the biggest shock was the wild burros (mules) that wandered the streets and footpaths and even got in the shops!!!! There was burro poop everywhere and the place stank to high heaven - but there were tourists galore - feeding the burros ...

    ... lane a lot).

Route 66 has been decommissioned so a lot of it is on freeways and once in a while you see signs for "Historic Route 66" where you have to turn off and take parts of the old road. We are tired of the LA traffic so we head to Barstow without turning off some of the road.

Barstow is a small town, there is a section where it is ol skool Americana. Kinda like the older side of Vegas, some motels still have signage ...
