    ... at the Morongo Casino, an Indian-owned casino hotel in California to have a look around. Then drove via SteinMart at Irvine for a final shop, and had a look at the Irvine Spectrum Centre, a flashy mall and entertainment/ dining precinct. Collected a couple of toll road charges and was unable to pay these online. Terrible web site. Bob said it would be better to pay in person at a counter, so we duly went along the next day. The clerk tried hard to be helpful but in the end ...

    ... many fountains and pools, complete with lily pads and coy (or are they carp?), a small church, leftover swallow nests (looks like a large mud-dobber nest) and lots of religious artifacts. We spent about 45 minutes walking around, and then hit the bookstore on the way out.

    Next up was the Northern Frontier. Josie really wanted to see an arctic wolf, but they didn’t have one. They did have an arctic fox, but it didn’t come out. We did see some polar bears who were just resting under their enclosures, and some reindeer. In our opinion, the enclosure for the reindeer was much too small, which makes us sad.

    Zoos walk a thin line with us. We love that ...
