... and three men lost their lives during the construction of the modern road. The terrain still causes problems as there can be major rock falls and land slips which close the road. Eventually the gorge opened out and became a wide valley which then flattened out entirely as we reached the coast. We had to travel along the coast westwards and the final part of the drive took us past salt marshes and a lagoon. Our motel was at Ohope Beach which is the beach resort adjacent ...

... thermal springs you will ever find. I am not exaggerating when I say the entire town smells of sulphur. I am told you get used to it but god knows how. After about two hours of local history, including details of the men who worked here mining sulphur and all their accidents and turmoils, mining ceasing in 1933, we returned to the boat and had a lovely pic nic lunch. We were so keen to eat that we missed the swimming off the back of the boat after hearing the skipper telling people to get out.

The trip home was fun as the swell ...

... answering the phone and replying to emails slowly throughout. As the day progressed we got more and more bookings in, by the end of the day I think it was 15 out of the 20 rooms booked out, one being a family of 5 who wanted 4 nights in the adjoining rooms 1&2, a nice $1000+ we just took. We managed to cope nice and easily, got a nice chunk of money in, made the meals for those who wanted them in the evening and didn't feel like we had missed out on doing anything due to ...
