We left for Milford Sound at 8:00 am. It was pretty clear in Te Anau but cloudy ahead. We stopped at the Eglington Valley Viewpoint at 8:45 and fog was settled at the base of the mountains in the distance. Our next stop was at Mirror Lake just a few minutes later. They had a very clever sign with "Mirror Lake" inverted so that it read Mirror Lake …

The first 20 miles very pretty but then into the forest of the national park so views mostly restricted apart from from flatlands where they used to graze cattle ...

... to cross Lake Manapouri, about an hours trip. Then we travel across a gravel track that takes you over a pass before dropping back down into Doubtful Sound where we boarded another boat. The captain announced that we would see a lot of waterfalls today as a result of last nights "significant rain event". ... earns it's name by having the town's only Chinese restaurant on the corner! To get to the campsite we had to walk along the lakefront so stopped for some obligatory stone skimming and moments later watched a light aircraft, that had obviously been taking in some of the scenery from the sky, land on the water. This quiet afternoon had us fully recharged and ready for the early morning pick up for the trip to Milford Sounds. When we woke up the rain had already started ...

... tried some local food ... yeap its all with what...number 1 Fergburger (yummie even with the aioli as Katharina hates garlic ) number 2 meatpie (fresh made ... hmmm) number x at the end ;-) the sausegges (wurst...) from the butcher...looked like still alive...for meeteaters I guess it was great but we were semihappy ... it was a lonely planet tipp ... so be careful in trusting these tipps... now we go further to lake tekapo...catch you later...
