    ... from barges moored just off the beach .....a wonderful finale to our big day.

    Margaret is involved as a volunteer at the Coastguard and had organised to give us a 2 hour guided tour (lead by her), of the base. Up and on our bikes we rode to the base,and eagerly awaited our 10 oclock tour time. Coastguard is under Homeland Security and was first begun in 1790...

    ... and learned about the Coast Guard festival coming up in a few weekends (just missed it!). It was wonderful to spend time catching up with Heather, while the waves crashed along the shore. The tall grasses and sand dunes are just like Cape Cod - it's easy to understand what drew them to this small Victorian town.

    After much deliberation, we settled on the Blue Pig Tavern at Congress Hall for a delicious dinner in a cozy setting (see picture below).

Fort Miles and the observation towers were abandoned by the Army in the early 1960s, but there have been some efforts to preserve these structures. Built to only last 20 years, they've been standing for over 60 years now. ....guess they don't build things like they use to!
