... a few friendly toots and waves from the drivers. We go over the crest and a short way on find a pull off for you guessed it the congratulatory selfie with view in the background. You'll notice that we are rugged up in our heavy duty raincoats. It's before 8 am and the temperature is 9 degrees! We have about 20 km more to our morning tea stop Whataroa. ... I'm told we were lucky that the river levels were so low, as when they're high this bit of the tour can be over in 40 seconds! Then it was out onto the river proper; we had been given special webbed gloves to help with paddling, but the best bits were going down the "rapids", which weren't massive but great fun nevertheless. ... they emitted a small light. As we flowed along the river in rubber tubes in otherwise total darkness, the lights gave the impression of staring up at the night sky. To add to the brilliant spectacle our guides led some more extreme activities. This included jumping backwards off 1.5 metre waterfalls, navigating rock formations and they topped it off by singing Disney songs to us. ... and on the buses round the city... Haven't met lots of locals yet but have made lots of international friends.
School holidays are coming up in 2 weeks so hopefully I will be exploring more of Auckland with the children.... cant wait!!
