And onto Wuyuan. A small town by Chinese standards - about 300,000 people. Its about 400km south east of Wuhan, or should I say a six hour bus ride. It's set in a hilly area of China and was my chance to see a bit of the countryside as scattered around the city are lots of old Huizhou villages where the traditional rural life still goes on. The first day here I headed out to one about 40 km east - Xiaoqi. Dates back to 787, or so the sign said. Lots of old houses and ...

... The original tower was built in AD 223 but the one I saw was a reconstruction - built in 1980. It has actually been reconstructed many times so who knows if it still resembles the original. Looked good though. The magical dancing crane, immortalised in the poetry of Cui Hao, has long since flown though. Passed by a couple of temples on my ...

From Yichang it was overland east - to Wuhan. Before I got off the boat I asked how I could get from the dock to the railway station at Yichang to catch a train to Wuhan. ... was so that we could see the beautiful scenery between Wuhan and Chongqing. But it wasn't too bad as we got to spend the day in Wuhan, a city I'd wanted to visit for ages and which is actually quite attractive. It was also steaming hot, and humid as a Swedish sauna. Luckily my friend knew some famous sites in Wuhan so we set off and checked them out. First of all, we went to eat breakfast... Chinese street noodles, spicy and all sorts of herbs, ...

... near the lobby and dining room. There are
small shops on the other floors selling traditional Chinese goods—wooden ware,
pearls, tea, hand painted bottles, chops, and even a tailor who will make you a
silk jacket or dress overnight. There is a bar on one floor, a lounge on
another, a computer lab, a library, infirmary, spa, beauty parlor, and big sun
deck. Our room is very nice and comfortable with a little ...
