    After Xi’an we head for Chengdu. Our hotel is nice and friendly but don’t speak a word of English. It’s a recurring theme in China and quite difficult. Apparently taxis don’t go to the train station, so says the English translation of the clerk at the hotel. Now that’s a problem because the metro doesn’t go there either and it’s at least 2km away. 2km isn’t the problem, ...

    ... no different. Shanghai is not, by its nature, a run-able or runner-friendly city. There are few parks near the CBD, and those that do exist are tiny, mostly smaller than a square block. It also gets relatively smoggy after the early morning, so going later than first thing isn't a great option. However, none of these factors mean that you can't run Shanghai; they merely make it more of an interesting challenge.
