Nice Facilities- SMOKE FILLED

The bed, western toilet, shower, and sink were all nice and satisfactory. They gave us a nice room, though there was construction out the window at the time, that isn't their fault and if you've been in China long enough, you're used to noise.

The first night was good. The second night, however, we returned to our room and it smelled like someone had a smoking party in our room. It was so bad that I could not breath. I went to the front desk and asked if they could give us another room, because we specifically asked for a non-smoking room, and they simply flat out refused.

Having that much smoke in your room is a health-hazard- it was not just a hint of smoke, it was smoke-filled.

We figured out the source; it was the pipes in the bathroom- the construction is so poorly made that the pipes filter up the smoke from the other smoking rooms in the hotel.

... On the drive home we picked up Grandma at the hospital where she'd had an appointment, then got home. Grandpa and Grandma invited us out for dinner at the Pioneer House (a classic!) and since they were going in about half an hour we decided why not. Had they been going any later we probably would have already been asleep. Dinner was good, but my eyes were definitely bigger than my very sore, very tired tummy.  After dinner I planned to go right to sleep, ...

... just once or twice a year.
Heading down, I came across a really nice area, where there was a gold Buddha and also red ribbons with Chinese symbols on them tied around the branches of the trees; I assume they were wishes. I wish I could read Mandarin. I walked on and managed to find my way off the main path and onto little paths through the forest that were totally secluded. It was awesome, and I spent a good few hours wandering, hearing only birdsong ...

... weaving buses and cyclists all weaving in and out. We decided the diplomatic way to describe the driving style is "confident". We survived the roads, and made it to Taipei 101, the 4th tallest building in the world. Despite not liking big buildings, I have to admit that its actually quite stylish. We had tea in an amazing bbq restaurant, and headed up to the top of the tower just after dark. The lift is the fastest in the world, ...

... with lots of the protective lions, and this time it was clear that alternate ones were male and female, as the female one was holding a baby and the male one looked more ferocious. There was also a pagoda, and into each little archway was carved a tiny Buddha.
What was great about the temple was that there was so much activity. There was the standard praying with incense sticks going on (I noticed they seemed to kneel down and pray for longer here, as opposed to ...
