7 hours in Guangzhou

A travel blog entry by davidwshih

The checkin opened at 7:30 and it was busy. After getting our boarding passes we went though security and immigration to arrive at the Premium lounge. Had a quick bite and relaxed and getting some work done in the comfortable chairs (like the ones at the door massage places). Had a quick shower to get ready for the red eye flight to ...

After one hour flight delay, we arrived in Guangzhou at 4pm but the connection on Turkish doesn't leave until 11pm. Kinda awkward timing as it's too little time to go into the city 41km away but too long until the check in counter opens at 7:30pm. The Guangzhou airport lack serious seating so good thing Air China First Class check in counter as ...

Huaisheng Mosque

Today I visited the Huaisheng Mosque, another of the recommended sites
from my arrival pack.

This is the 2nd mosque I have been to now - 1st one in
Xi'an, when Michael was visiting me.

A mosque visit is very different to a temple visit - for
starters, there are no crowds, and no joss sticks being burnt. The GZ mosque
covered a much smaller area than ...

Haircuts and heat

A travel blog entry by deborah.young

For the second time in GZ, I needed a haircut.

Last year, this was a very painless process, as I found a good place on the first go. However, my first attempt here wasn't quite as good, and I ended up with way too short a cut, especially on the fringe!

So today I decided to try another hairdresser at Nan Guo Ao Yuan (my apartment complex) as there are at least 5 of them here.

I enjoyed the experience today, and will go back to the place again - started ...

... cabin crew were pulling the seats apart in a desperate search for my identity. It meant we were delayed getting off the plane, which meant the VIP bus (Yes, I'm a VIP in China) was also delayed and other passengers across the entire arport were going to be late too. Their connecting flights', gates would remain open when they should have been closed, schedules would be messed ...

    Nice Facilities- SMOKE FILLED

The bed, western toilet, shower, and sink were all nice and satisfactory. They gave us a nice room, though there was construction out the window at the time, that isn't their fault and if you've been in China long enough, you're used to noise.

The first night was good. The second night, however, we returned to our room and it smelled like someone had a smoking party in our room. It was so bad that I could not breath. I went to the front desk and asked if they could give us another room, because we specifically asked for a non-smoking room, and they simply flat out refused.

Having that much smoke in your room is a health-hazard- it was not just a hint of smoke, it was smoke-filled.

We figured out the source; it was the pipes in the bathroom- the construction is so poorly made that the pipes filter up the smoke from the other smoking rooms in the hotel.
