Nice Facilities- SMOKE FILLED

The bed, western toilet, shower, and sink were all nice and satisfactory. They gave us a nice room, though there was construction out the window at the time, that isn't their fault and if you've been in China long enough, you're used to noise.

The first night was good. The second night, however, we returned to our room and it smelled like someone had a smoking party in our room. It was so bad that I could not breath. I went to the front desk and asked if they could give us another room, because we specifically asked for a non-smoking room, and they simply flat out refused.

Having that much smoke in your room is a health-hazard- it was not just a hint of smoke, it was smoke-filled.

We figured out the source; it was the pipes in the bathroom- the construction is so poorly made that the pipes filter up the smoke from the other smoking rooms in the hotel.

As we were disembarking we noticed the other two airlines who were also taxied at Baiyan international airport were Ethiopian air and Egyptian air. With the current Ebola outbreak we were both a bit nervous about coming in close proximity with anyone from those flights.

... 3 groups of little girls from a dance company who performed. Hilary and I had instant Copeland flashbacks. We said goodbye to everybody and headed off to bed since we had an early flight. Day 11: We woke up early and got on a plane to Guangzhou. Now we are finally on our own! No tour guides, no schedule to follow. It's awesome. We got to the hotel, dropped our stuff off, and started exploring. There are so many shops in Guangzhou, it's insane. ...

... popular with the locals. The food was excellent although a little bit like the show Fear Factor. I didn't ask too much about what type of meat was in our food. I actually tried chicken feet...Surprisingly the taste was not bad, however once is enough. Our next stop was to tour the new city center. The Asia Games were held here in 2010. The city spent $$$$ to develop the area for the games. This includes a stadium exclusively for the opening and ...

... time we had come out from lunch, it was pouring, so the planned walk to a temple was put off. I thought I knew where some shopping markets were, but got it wrong (!) so we ended up spending a lot of time on the subway with no result. Ah well, that's part of the adventure too, I suppose..

On Sat morning we were all up early again and by 5:30 am I had put Carol & Don in a taxi for the airport. It was ...

... by a very wealth family in Guangzhou. The original purpose was for the family to live in it and also to offer sacrifices for the family ancestors. Thankfully no sacrifices were made yesterday and we enjoyed our visit. It has now become similar to an art museum and also has many active artisans that do paintings, paper cutting and carving. After that we went to Lychee Bay which is a large park with water in the middle of the city. We then returned to our hotel. It ...
