... On Fri I didn't have to be at school until the evening, so we went in and had a look round the Chen Clan Academy which really impressed me on my first visit. There was a man doing traditional style painting on special paper, and he was keen for us to have a go, using all his English words to tell us so! He was very friendly, and when we declined his offer he gave us some of the special paper anyway.

... I told them that would had as a soup in NZ, and could easily be the whole meal. It was rather large, and filling, but very good. Not sure why we don't have it as a hot drink, really - would be better for us than coffee?

They told me I need to go back and look around in the daytime - the universities are arranged in 3 circles, and you can hire a bike to go between them as the area is pretty big. Lots of parks, and a big lake in the middle, so I will have a look one day soon.

... so I said ni hau back - you should have seen his face!!!! I always tell them I can't speak Chinese, and he couldn't get over the fact that I had said it quite naturally to him! He told all the others as they came in - teacher can speak Chinese! All said in Chinese, and I know enough to understand that!

Anyway, once the class had arrived, I sat up straight in my chair, and the 2 new teachers started. They did a perfect imitation of me! Who wants to try? ...

... poverty. There will be many tear and broken hearts. I might not be used to this kind of life at first. It may bring discomfort. However, this trip allows me to go through a different life that I have never had, but many children in my country are going through. I will appreciate the life I now have and determine to work hard to fight for the children who are not as lucky as I am.

    Thunderstorms, GZ-style

... I had a hunt on-line for some local news reports, and found these gems - all on translated sites, haven't found one that is written in English yet, though these are so good, why try!

Read them slowly and with a box of tissues at hand - my favourite is that we have a Department of rampaging thunderclouds - how good is that!!! I think it even trumps the underground hail lightning storm. Let me know your thoughts...

    Ahh, China :)
