Early 6.00 start today to leave for the station to catch the TranzAlpine Railway from Cristchurch to Greymouth. The train journey starts at 08.15 and ends around 12.30 having crossed the New Zealand Alps. Then we walk to the Avis office to collect our car for the drive to Franz Joseph for an overnight before we drive to Queenstown.

We woke about 8:15am after almost 10 hours asleep. I think we needed that after the dreadful night the evening before. It was a beautiful day, no chance of the helicopter hike being cancelled then! We had a terrible nights sleep in the B&B as it was just too hot. Thankfully we had an early start so we were and up and out by 7:10am. We woke up to the sound of birds singing in the temperate rainforest around the hotel but then came the buzz of a helicopter...and then another. It is impossible to get right on to the glacier on foot so you have to go by helicopter. But we decided to walk just as far as the face.
