We woke up to the sound of birds singing in the temperate rainforest around the hotel but then came the buzz of a helicopter...and then another. It is impossible to get on to the glacier on foot so you have to go by helicopter. But we decided to walk to the face. It takes about an hour over rocky ground. At times all we could hear were the sounds …
Disappointingly, the cloud is still with us though it has stopped drizzling at least. The helicopter flights were cancelled due to the weather so we are booked for tomorrow. We just need the cloud to clear but it is looking unlikely right now! Franz Josef gets four times the annual rainfall of London so cloud is always expected. Little consolation …
... has flown by. Will & John were great guides and we're on a high. As we're the last ones off its all to the pub (we didn't suggest it honest.....ok we did). We have a couple of drinks with the guides who are funny and they tell me there's a vacancy, dam me being too old for a working visa. I love it here, think my next skiing destination is found. We head back to the hostel shattered but with a sense of achievement today. All in all today has been one of my most amazing days ...

We stood and marvelled at the glacier; listening to small rockfalls and creaks as the glacier moved imperceptibly slowly towards the sea (it moves around 4cm per day) and then finally made our way back down to the car.
