Mombassa

Headed from Nairobi to Mombassa on the 13th of Sept. It was a 12 hour bus journey with John and Nimrod - The bus looked like the one out of the movie speed, but by all accounts it travels much slower - as it is dark I couldn't give a ****.All the busses and matatus (literally hi - aces with about 12 seats ) are brightly decorated with either premiership soccer team logos / N.B.A. grafetti. When we arrive in Mombassa you are quickly surrounded by people offering to give you a lift - it can be ...

ancient city

Where next? Malindi or Lamu. Lamu looked like miles away. Still closer now than from any other place. Bus there, bus somewhere, and we already on the way there, to the mysterious island with an ancient town. I apologize to polish roads, as in comparison to those in Kenya, they used to be brilliant (and we cursed them so much). I have no idea, how buses survive such conditions. I see, drivers try to sail on the road and escape all the potholes which are there in plenty. Soon after I started to...

... mention he sounds like a really interesting (if not intimidating) guy. We head to Peponi's (a hotel down the beach from our guesthouse, it is not muslim run as ours is so therefore... has beer!). We text Chris to see if he is around. Let me back up for a moment... before we headed to Peponi's the guy at our guest house is all over us to have dinner with them. We had already not eaten there the night before....and we were pretty tired of them hassling us about it, so we said yes... we ...

... people, but couldn’t see or find them, unless you went up some stairs, then down some, round the corner and up some more etc! My room had a sort of four poster wooden bed, but with a mosquito net instead of hanging fabric, and a fan, that I was very grateful for because it kept the mosquitoes away and kept me cool during the humid nights! When I arrived the bed was decorated with real small pretty flowers; it had great romance potential! My saloon style ...

... of note, with giant crabs and lobster, which we slapped up with borrowed pots and pans, cooking in the dark. The food was orgasmic! Saturday 23rd I woke up full of seafood, my body suggesting I urgently empty my bowels, which I did with the greatest of pleasure. I then filled the subsequent void with gigantic perfectly ripe avocados, pineapple and coconut, all local produce. I packed up my belongings and rushed to the ferry, on foot, with all my ...

... two differnt types of butterflies. We also did get lost and had to turn around before we got lost in there forever. We walked forever! We actually did more walking in that hike than we really did in teh 43 days of our tour! After our walk we went back to Gedi to get our bags and more food and then went to Watamu, a beach town, or at least that is what they advertise. The place we rented there was disgusting! I ran into 2 cockroaches in teh shower and I ...

Lamu, Paradise on Earth

... strong of a word. The people of Lamu are Swahili. They are really a mix of cultures derived from the historical tribes that existed along the northern coast of Kenya, Portugese, Arab, and probably other sailers thrown in. The Arabs were the conqueror in the end, and slave trade here was a big business during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. They kidnapped hundreds of thousands of people from the inland tribes and many thousands of people died. The people are predominantly ...
