      Massive hostel but typical YHA

      This hostel is huge, modern and has really helpful staff. It's a typical YHA though in the sense that it has zero atmosphere. No one talks to each other and its very quiet.

      More like a hotel than a hostel, the staff were mostly friendly and helpful and helpfully located across the road from the supermarket and close to the CBD. Dorms were clean but too hot and badly ventilated. The staff threw out my food in error which was disappointing. OK but there are nicer places in Wellington to stay.

      I arrived after a 11 hour bus journey to find in the dorm all the beds looked like they were being slept in and there was no clean bedding! Not good! But as soon as I went to the reception they fixed it right away and apologised too which was nice! There is a cafe here which serves cheap tasty coffee too!

      I loved staying at the YHA Wellington. It was super clean which was an amazing bonus! The staff were super friendly and gave ideas for you to do around the city. I was going to head back to Auckland, but liked YHA Wellington, I decried to stay longer!

      YHA Wellington City absolutely stands out for the great facilities. Kitchens are well equipped and spacious. The dvd room offers a large beamer and plenty of movies. And the communal spacious are also spacious and relaxing. Rooms itself are okay and clean, yet the bed could have been bigger for 2 persons. Great stay!

      OK, but could probably find better for less

      We booked this hostel for our stay during Christmas 2010 based on the review in the Lonely Planet. However; the prices increased a lot and so we ended up paying 101 NZD/night for a double room without an ensuite. The room grew incredibly hot during the day when the sun was on the window and at night you could open the window, but it wouldn't cool down if you didn't leave your door open, since no airflow.
      It is a huge hostel with plenty of room to accomodate everyone as far as kitchen and dining room space goes, but for the amount of money, I really wonder whether you wouldn't be able to find something more personal and more luxurious for the same or a lesser price?

      We arrived in Wellington just before lunch on Waitangi Day - the most important New Zealand National holiday commemorating the signing of the treaty between the Maori tribes. After settling into yet another YHA, we set out to get some lunch before returning the car, to just outside the city itself.

      We went to the national museum Te Papa today. We saw an amazing array of exhibits on earthquakes and volcanoes, the NZ ecosystem, invasive species, Maori tribes and history, modern racial and social changes in NZ, and the top two floors were art and sculputure exhibits. It's a great museum, and everything except a dinosaur exhibit we skipped was …

      I arrived into sunny Auckland on Sunday evening and was greeted by Jenny, a friend who I had lived with at university. Poor Jenny - for the past 15 years communication between us has been limited to Christmas cards and Facebook friends and then I show up out of the blue with my rucksack full of dirty laundry, asking if I can leave some stuff with …

      A one week summary:

      • North Island is generally better than I remembered;
      • German and Irish people get everywhere;
      • NZ still can't do sausages or NYE;
