My Birthday in the Okavanga Delta!

... buggy, so Gabe and I both enjoyed the ride a lot although we didn’t see any elephants, or hippos or crocs. Part way through though all the polers stopped in the middle of the Delta and we looked around wondering what was going on, we started sitting up and looking wildly around thinking maybe they had spotted something big. It turned out Heini had made me a bouquet of lollipops and two lilies from the lily pods and ...

Watch out for the Crocs!

... the reeds began falling off and sticking onto us as we brushed against them, the occasional spider attempting to make a home around our legs. It didn’t bother me too much but Gabe wasn’t a huge fan. A lot of people slept and Gabe and I did briefly, but just as I’d dose off a weed would whip me in the face! With about half an hour to go Gabe pulled out the umbrella and we each took a turn in the ...

Moremi, the pride of southern Africa

... wildlife adventure around southern Africa, Kirilee and I were honestly ready and tempted to leave a day early, get off the insanely bumpy, rugged dirt roads and give ourselves an extra day to make the long journey back to Johannesburg. But we kept faith that our luck would turn and decided to stay for the final night at Third Bridge campsite. After the lack of predator sightings in the days prior, the three other couples had decided to head off the following morning ...

North Gate and that infamous bridge

... against the tyre, neither of us were going anywhere. Mind you where would we go as we were miles from any town? Out came the satellite phones - thank goodness we went back for ours (we had forgotten it after the debriefing and had to go back the next day to pick it up). It turned out that for both of us the Botswana representative was the same company. We knew immediately that the Germans weren't going anywhere in their car so they called to get recovered. I'm not sure how ...

... punting. Amazingly Krys, Mongfoot and Tom (from the previous group) walked around the corner before we were setting off as they had heard us arriving earlier. It was great to see them so we all headed to the water pool together. The water was absolutely freezing but that didn't deter the blokes and then the Swiss girls having a bit of a dip. I had a try at punting one of the dug outs, but it was far more difficult than it looked (these guys punting us definitely had ...

Hakuna Matata

This morning we left at 6am, drove for 2 hours in an open-air vehicle (in the freezing cold) to arrive at a boat station. Here we loaded all our things onto "Mokoros" (little wooden dug out canoes) and with 2 people in each mokoro and a poler (ours was called "Slow") we ...

Mokoros in the Delta

... out sausage tree wood, but ours was made of fiberglass!! The benefit of fiberglass was it wasn't as low into the water once us and our camping gear were in it and therefore didn't leak water! Each mokoro had its own poler, a person who pushed the canoe through the delta with a pole. Our poler's name was Lister. We rode in the mokoros through reeds for about two hours until we reached an island within the delta where we'd be ...

safari

... I am such a child) because it's really bumpy and you have to hang on incredibly tightly to keep from falling off into the brush, and you have a completely unobstructed view of the veldt. I was fired, though, because I failed to spot some impalas, and had to go back to my normal seat in the truck. Oh well. The safari was largely what I expected. It was wonderful to be able to see all the animals in their "natural environment" and to get to ...

Moremi Game Reserve

... With in 20 minutes we spotted a pack of Hyena¡¦s devouring a dead elephant. It was with out a doubt an incredible sight to see. Not SMELL, but sight. As we approached we all covered our mouths and noses to protect ourselves from such a fowl sent. The hyenas were so engulfed with there breakfast they barely noticed us. Over head the vultures lured and scoped out there next meal, while I sat grinning from ear to ear.
