Natural Phenomenon

Wow, wow, wow!!! We had the most amazing time exploring Undara Volcanic National Park. We had the perfect caravan site metres from a beautiful pool and amenities and had the place virtually to ourselves as the season hadn't quite started yet.

We began our adventures by undertaking the Archway Explorer tour. This tour was fantastic and …

A day in Undara

A travel blog entry by stephwoodall

Today we had a very relaxing day at Undara. Undara is an area of North Queensland that had significant volcanic activity millions of years ago. What is unique about this place is that it has the longest and largest lava tubes in the world. Lava tubes are formed when the lava flow runs beneath the earths surface and once cooled it leaves a hollowed …

We will probably update this post tomorrow as we are in Undara for a couple of days. I did think that it would be worth while giving you an update on how we actually arrived here with the emphasis on we actually!.

We left Charters Towers fairly early this morning at around 7.30 - 8.00. We continued up the Gregory Developmental Road which …

Mount Surprise and Undara Lava Tubes.

A travel blog entry by abbeysadventure

Mount Surprise is about 130km from Mount Garnet. I wouldn't call it a town or a village, i think the only way to describe it is the outback. Its basically 2 petrol stations, a pub and a couple of campsites along the main road. There is also a school; i feel sorry for the kids that go there. We stopped off at the petrol station to refuel, and lets …

Lava Tubes

A travel blog entry by wanderingwatson

The first stop was Undara to go to the Lava tubes. We decided to go south almost to Innisfail hoping that the road there would be less zigzaggy than the other roads over the dividing range at Atherton. It was still a steep climb, but not as windy, though there were a lot of road works.

At Undara we decided to take a short (!?) walk which …

This was an amazing place with friendly and helpful staff. Despite being there during the off season, we were pleasantly surprised by the options available to us. Highly recommend this experience.

The camp as very nice, with clean amenities. Very busy, had to have unpowered as no powered sites available. Dusty, but it was bush camping. $12.00/head forunpowered.

    A must see!

The park abounds in natural wildlife, has a range of accommodation styles (we were caravanning) , great bar and bistro, information centre, wellmarkedwalks and overall excellent facilities. The price at first seemed a little high compared to other parks but the experience was unique and well worth every cent!! We did the Arhway tour at $52 for two hours, our guide Bram was exceptional and his obvious love and passion for the country and its features helped make this an informative, unique and quite frankly almost overwhelming experience. The cost was the best value for money of the trip so far though it is hard to appreciate that till after the event. It was like stepping into another dimension somewhere between Tolkien's Middle Earth and The Land Time Forgot! Don't miss it ifyouhave a chance to got here!
