Undara Lava Tubes

We have moved further into outback Queensland to visit the Undara Lava Tubes. These are tubes which were formed by erupting volcanoes where a crust formed over the lava flow but the lava kept flowing beneath the crust evenutally leaving massive hollow tubes stretching for miles underground. Getting to the place was an event in itseld as the road quickly turned from a normal road to a single lane road with soft verges on each side. Luckily we had been told in advance about the three trailer zi...

Not a very relaxing drive

Today we set of on the dangerous journey along the development road about 380km to Undara Volcanic Lava Tubes. The fog was thick and set in until 9.30am and the road is one lane for most of it with big 4 trailer trucks thundering along it to whom we are meant to give way – didn't make for a very relaxing drive but Jeremy did an excellent job – still didn’t stop the heart pumping wildly on occasions when those big trucks come at you. WA roads will never be put down by me ever...

Undara Lava Tubes

Tuesday, 9th October, 2007 Driving to Undara National Park (Written by Suzanne) There was a very heavy dew overnight and with being on the boat yesterday most of the towels and clothes were still very damp. The sun is up at about 6.00am with enough heat to start drying the washing. At this free camp there are toilets and cold showers and as I was still salty from yesterday I braved the cold and had a super quick shower as we would be in the car for the most of the day, Stephen and the boys de...

Undara Lava Tubes

So we are out in the 'outback', a little anyway, and had a few firsts after a few days with Major Tom. Firstly we have come against these epic 'road trains', which are basically exactly that. They are huge trucks pulling up to four long trailers a time and flogging it along shared single lane roads. I'm like a little child when I see them and just gawk at them. When meeting them though I pull over onto the gravel to let them past so they have all the tarmac and don't pull over themselves and ...

The world's largest lava tubes

... a bit of wildlife on the way (wallaroos, wallabys etc). The tubes themselves are really big (up to 14m high!) and a nice cool temperature. At the start of the year, they had lots of rain so the water table had risen. It had risen so far that it came up into the tubes (metres high). We got to walk into two of the tubes, about 50m in.

Charters Towers to Undara National Park

... road trains do not do this, they stay in the middle of the road and you are expected to drive right off on to the gravel, of course you do not argue with a huge truck towing 3 trailers but they often approach at such speed that it is difficult to get off the road in time and can be quite hair-raising. It is on this road that I got my first puncture of the trip. I had stopped at one of the two places where fuel is available and had gone on for about ...

#11 on the road again

... therapeutic. Scott agrees with his knee reaping the benefits! The hottest pool is so hot that I cannot even brave it. I settle for the 3rd warmest, but at a temp of 39C, it’s warm enough for me! Before we head off we venture out to the natural source. Crikey, some areas of the spring are literally boiling.

Mount Surprise was where I finally posted some postcards, although I have my doubts about them arriving back in the UK as the postbox was empty when I dropped them in. Not sure how often the post is picked up out here.

Because we started early, we made it to Undarra by lunchtime. I think that is the best way to do these long journeys, start really early in the morning, then you still have some time to explore, particularly as the sun ...

Undara volcanic national park

Cath and I visited Undara volcanic national park from 4 Sep to 7 Sep.   We have been here once before in 2003 and we enjoyed it so much that we decided to go again, this time however we were staying for 3 nights and not just a day trip. We set up our tent in the tent site and we found the amenities very good and close to where we were camped.   The are caravan sites, permanent tents for those ...
