The Lava Tubes

A travel blog entry by dahlsen_family on Aug 20, 2014

We booked on a tour of the lava tubes in the morning. We visited three separate tubes and learned how these amazing caverns were formed. Undara holds the world record for the longest tube from a single vent - 160km. The tubes are formed when a flow of lava travels along a course and the top part, which is exposed to the air, hardens to form a shell …

Cobbold Gorge - A little stunner

One of the beauties of travelling light is the ease with which we can change plans. Not having undertaken extensive research of the Gulf country we didn't really know what was around. A brochure we picked up the night before in Georgetown alerted us to Cobbold Gorge only 90km away. So off we went.

We arrived quite early and were able to …

Arrived in Undara

Today we arrived in Undara for our 2 night stop. After we had set up we went for a bit of a sticky beak around the caravan park and also went on a bit of a walk. When we came back we saw a trio of Eastern Grey Kangaroos which was quite exciting because one of them was a joey.

From Cobbold Gorge we went to Undara Volcanic National Park. We went on a tour of the lava tubes. Some were deep and some were dark. The hike up and down was steep, but fun because I got to scramble over big rocks. I don't get to do this at home. The lava tubes were formed when the Undara volcano erupted slowly. Lava flowed down into the creeks and …

A fine line between pleasure and pain ...

What a pleasure it has been travelling around and seeing the amazing sights of this country. What a pain it is to find a unique place that is so focussed around making money. Look, I am happy to be challenged on this, cos it was a grumpy day when we arrived so I felt a bit negative about EVERYTHING …

Lovely caravan park although very confusing set out. Bush setting, wildlife. Lovely clean amenities (altho if you must have shower curtains, why use white ones? A bit of bleach, people!)

This was an amazing place with friendly and helpful staff. Despite being there during the off season, we were pleasantly surprised by the options available to us. Highly recommend this experience.

The camp as very nice, with clean amenities. Very busy, had to have unpowered as no powered sites available. Dusty, but it was bush camping. $12.00/head forunpowered.

    A must see!

The park abounds in natural wildlife, has a range of accommodation styles (we were caravanning) , great bar and bistro, information centre, wellmarkedwalks and overall excellent facilities. The price at first seemed a little high compared to other parks but the experience was unique and well worth every cent!! We did the Arhway tour at $52 for two hours, our guide Bram was exceptional and his obvious love and passion for the country and its features helped make this an informative, unique and quite frankly almost overwhelming experience. The cost was the best value for money of the trip so far though it is hard to appreciate that till after the event. It was like stepping into another dimension somewhere between Tolkien's Middle Earth and The Land Time Forgot! Don't miss it ifyouhave a chance to got here!
