We spent the morning in Honolulu at the hotel being basically lazy...Dart journalizing while I updated the blogs and copied our photo collection (thus far) onto CDs. My paranoia leads to a copy of photos on a portable drive, the laptop's hard drive, and CDs...we lost a bunch of photos from one of our earliest trips and we take all manner of protective actions to prevent its recurrence. Anyhow, We stuck around Waikiki for the morning and checked out around 12:30 or so. All in all, we were plea...
Vaitogi, Tutuila, American Samoa tomdart07Today had about as much activity packed in as I could imagine...a very different part of the world than we are used to, and a little difficult to translate to our friends back home. This morning, after yet another fabulous sleep (interestingly, since we are in a basic cottage with no AC - tropical breezes are GREAT!), we started with coffee and breakfast. Ben found us a ripe papaya, which we ate with relish. I don't know if this type is different than we can grow back home, but it certainly t...
Vaitogi, Tutuila, American Samoa tomdart07We're sitting in the Transit Lounge at Pago Pago International Airport with about 90 minutes to go before our flight is scheduled to leave. Our flight leaves Pago at 11:30 PM local time and arrives in Honolulu tomorrow morning at 5:30 AM local time - a five hour flight with a one time zone loss. The incoming Hawaiian Airlines flight has just arrived, so we should be in pretty good shape for our transfer over to the inter-island flight to Hilo. It has been a very interesting experience visitin...

... practicing my dog whispering skills on them though, and am fairly convinced that I can take over the show if something happens to Caesar.

Life is starting to get into a routine down here. I'm pretty comfortable with the new house, and don't have any real complaints. It really big, and since our rooms are on the second floor, we get a pretty nice breeze that cools everything down pretty good. We've lost luxuries like a/c ...
Pago Pago, American Samoa wolfeac... we were told that the move was final and that there was nothing we could do about it. So we'll be moving down the street. It won't be too bad though, the house is still a lot nicer than what some volunteers have.

We also started school yesterday. I'm teaching one Calc course, one Pre-calc course, and 3 geometry courses. I have an fourth geometry course for the first 3 weeks because one of the teachers is off island until then. Things have been fairly ...
Pago Pago, American Samoa wolfeac... on runs here, so the locals actually break out laughing when they see me sometimes, but it's starting to rub off on the group, and now about 2/3's of us are up and running some amount a couple times a week.

We had one girl drop out of the program after only one day. It was kind of creepy, she just had a total breakdown and kind of went crazy. She started telling all the guys that they were going to father her child, and ...
Pago Pago, American Samoa wolfeacFriday 5 September Lost in Time For a day that doesn't exist, it's quite pleasant. Calm enough for a three-mile walk, anyway. Have decided to shift most of my gadgets to New Zealand time for a while. Right now, my watch says it's 10:09 on the 5th; my computer says ...
Pago Pago, Cook Islands pete-rPago Pago (American Samoa) - 9th February 2008. Hot, humid and the occasional shower was the weather of the day when we arrived at Pago Pago. We had no trips planned and decided to wander around the harbour, however on leaving the ship there was a "bus" taking visitors around the island for 10$ each so we hopped on hoping for the best. The bus was a wooden construction with no glass in the ...
Pago Pago, American Samoa queenvictoria... Th main industry is fishing and a huge cannery here is owned by Star Kist Tuna. The big fishing boats have a small heliocopter on the deck pad which is used to hunt for schools of tuna. Wish I had that kind of resource in Mexico! Gwen and I walked about 3 miles to one end of the town, came back to the ship for lunch, then walked about 3 miles to the other end. The Samoans were very friendly, we saw ...
