... come out to the market in the morning to buy it at wholesale prices and take it back to the land market where they sell it at retail prices to other locals, restaurants and hotels. We drove the length of the market and back which took well over half an hour. It was fascinating seeing day-to-day commerce on the Mekong. The boat then took us across the river to Tiger island, whose claim to fame was as the birth place of Ton Duc Thon, the successor to Ho Chi Minh as the leader of ...

... on the head! At the dock we met our minivan once more and had a 3 h drive to our next overnight stop, Long Xuyen. Just before it we stopped at a crocodile farm for lunch, and yes, the restaurant did serve crocodile (curried, stir fried, wrapped in rice paper...). We weren't quite feeling adventurous enough though so we settled for some deep fried Basa fish with orange sauce and some stir fried meat dishes. ... and is basically a 'Halong Bay' type landscape on land, with an amazingly blue river flowing in and around incredible karst scenery. This place is also far less visited than the more touristy 'Tam Coc', which is about 7km southwest of Ninh Binh. We took a very small paddle boat around Trang An, with an older couple, and a girl around the same age travelling on her own. So in total there were 6 of us (including a little Vietnamese lady paddling us along) in a ...

... It took 45 minutes to get there. We wondered how touristy it would be. The first boat that we came across was one with a cooler and boiler on it selling soft drinks and coffee. Thankfully there were only three boats out of a hundred doing this so it hadn't been ruined, yet! The boats were everything from long rowing boats to 50ft bulbous things carrying thousands of durian/coconuts/pineapples/water melon. Fruit was most of the trade that we saw, small ...
