Tharu Village

Today we said goodbye to Tiger Tops and to our new friends. We took a wooden rowboat down the river to a lodge right in the Tharu village. On the way, we rode through some small rapids and we saw some gharials in the wild, which was really, really cool. They were just lying there baking in the sun. We are staying in longhouses, which are what Tharu people live in. They told us if we heard noises in the night, it would be three things: · Shrews crawling around on the roof (we rescued one from ...

Paragliding and elephants

As promised the rest of my story!

I went to Pokhara just for one day for one hour of paragliding. It was nice to be back in a place where I didn't need to find out where the cheapiest and best food is and where a good hotel is or what to have to pay for the bus to get me to the right place. I booked the paragliding for the following morning and just relaxed the rest of the day. Oh yeah we had an accident on the way. Our experienced driver, the ...

Le roi de la pedale....

... c'est la ou on va, est loin. Et la il me dit, 17 km. Je demande si c'est au total, il me dit non que non c'est juste l'aller... Quoi!?!?

... blades. When speaking to a local guide, he asked if we had seen any bears or crocodiles, Amy nearly passed out. We did get to see a really big animal that night when a mouse flashed across the bedroom floor just before lights out. Again, Amy nearly passed out. The little bugger slipped under the door and we didn't see him again.

Sauraha was a good place to relax so we stayed an extra night before moving on.

Rhinos and Elephants and Crocks, Oh My!

... and swore over and over he would find me a rhino with what were, I swear, tears beginning to well up in his eyes. And in the end he climbed to the top of the tallest tree he could find. I almost figured he was doing it for show, trying to demonstrate how hard he was trying for me by climbing to higher and higher branches. But then he was yelling.

"Rhino, Rhino, by that lake!"

The next thing I knew he was on the ...

Chitwan National Park

We arrived in Chitwan at lunchtime and went with a tout and found an okay place to stay but it was right on the river and only 300 rupees which is just over two pound so we were happy. We are staying just outside the National Park in a town called Sauraha which is on the Rapti river bank, it is a small town with hundreds of places to stay and few shops and restaurants. We had a lovely walk down the river and watched the sunset over the ...

... be believed.

The best day by far was Friday which included an elephant safari into the jungle to see rare Indian Rhinos. After lunch we headed to the river to catch up with the elephants cooling down after carrying us tourists around all day. It was pretty special to ride one into the river (after it peed in it beforehand). The owner ...

... in the mud. That was enough for me.

About three hours into our trek we were fighting our way through tall grasses when our guide said it was time to turn back, all the rhinos would be sleeping by that time. He apologized we hadn't seen anything. No sooner had the words left his mouth when the grasses right beside us, some eight feet high and thick, started rustling like crazy. There was a series of ...
