Hello South Island
... found Christchurch pretty moving and really interesting to see. Given that the news coverage of it back home stopped a couple of weeks after, I was shocked by the state it is still in 18 months on.

The Cellar Door
Woke up to somewhat ****** weather. Rainy, overcast....etc....oh well.
Alex and I were planning on heading out to the vineyards around Wanaka and Cromwell. We got on the way around 1030 and began heading over the crown range and towards Wanaka. The drive is very windy at times through the gorge and valleys. When you get up on the crown range you see can look down into the valley and see arrow town and get an idea of the size of everything. ...

... checking in at Base (and getting a cheeky free upgrade to a double room!) we headed down to Kai Whakapai, a little cafe/bar facing the lake, and had a coffee with Jen and Drew before watching the sunset over the lake with the rest of the Kiwi group.
