Sasan Gir National Park, Gujarat, India theholidaymaker... park, which was nice. We heard that the animals from the Park often wander onto the Lodge's grounds. The night watchman brought a strong floodlight with him to sweep it over the grounds. There was nothing there at the time, but he promised that he saw something he'd come get us. He never came, so we guess nothing wandered onto the land. We drank coconut milk out of the coconut. Sadly, it wasn't chilled. Refreshing nonetheless.
Sasan Gir National Park, Gujarat, India stuckinindia... surprised by how dirty the temples have been. You'd think with so many worshippers there would be many faithful wanting to keep their place of worship clean. We also went by Porbander today; it is where Mahatma Gandhi was born. Again, the heat and crush of people dissuaded us from any sightseeing there. We went to an ATM and called it good. Added to our funny signs collection ...
Sasan Gir National Park, Gujarat, India stuckinindiaTager Safari Following on from a sun soaked week in Diu, we hit the road once more, making a bee-line for a Hill Station at Mt Abu on the Gujarat-Rajasthan Border. We were counting the months, then the weeks, but its now only a matter of days before we exit India, for an inevitably more sedate place, any-place! We will be working our way as far north as possible over the next 2 days, before taking a train (with) bikes back ...
Sasan Gir, India chaymus... time itself. Indeed, Jains do not believe that either time or the universe have a beginning or end. They do believe, however, in the equality of souls, or jivas, in terms of their ability to achieve enlightenment or moksha. They also believe in non-violence, truth, non-possessiveness, chastity, and non-stealing as main ethical principals. The path to moksha involves observing these principals as well as living an ...
Palitana, Gujarat, India lraleigh... Colorful women working in the fields, kids waving at the train, cows and entire families on a motorbike. We arrived in Veraval at night and this place was surreal. Small town crammed with people. Was very dusty and had no tourists so everyone was staring. We got taken to huge hotel that has been dead for 50 years. It was souless and very eriee. We decided to sleep, wake up ...
Diu, India hudsondino... amazing hospitatily in their home receiving breakfast, lunch and dinner calls from the chef and relaxing in the pool. We must say a big thank you to Devesh and family for allowing us this privilege. It was interesting to experiece some Indian life outside the usual tourist spots.
Wankaner, India amyandmark... for a swim, as they were all wearing collared shirts and jeans with sneakers - never in my life have I felt so 'dirty'... urgh they were awful. New Years, just like Christmas was very different. We'd met up a Kiwi/Aussie couple, Blair and Brylee, and decided to hit one of the local bars for the evening. After a wicked Thali - a traditional Indian meal served in small bowls on a round tray with dishes like rice, dal, vegetables, chapati, papad, curd ...
Diu, India antandrelAmitabh and I rolled into Junagadh in the afternoon, just in time to have a quick lunch and see a bit of the amazing 'Indo-Islamic' architecture of the region in the gorgeous light of the setting sun. The most striking was the Mahabat Maqbara mausoleum buildings, one of which is surrounded by minarets with elegant spiral stairways and the other was topped by loads of little onion-shaped domes, much like St Peter's in Moscow (guess who noticed that--it wasn't ...
Junagadh, India mimmik... probably has one permanent ape-arm. We rolled in to Diu at noon, and found the Jay Shankar guesthouse, which was almost perfect: a sunny balcony, an en suite bathroom, a TV that got "Just Shoot Me" reruns at 7:30. Really, the only drawback was the saltwater shower. After 6 days, I felt like a pickle. We spent the whole week relaxing. Phil had picked up a cold (probably from the toxic air in Ahmedabad; I'm very bitter against that city) and my back was still hurting occasionally, so we ...
