On the Macal River in the Jungle, Mile 5 Cristo Rey Road/PO Box 179 San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize
The Belizian version of a chicken bus pulled into Maya beach bang on time and we piled in and bumped and rocked our way down the gravelly, potholed road to Belmopan where we would change buses to get to San Ignacio. Once we hit the Hummingbird highway the roads were tarmac and easy driving. The bus drivers were all so friendly and helpful (one kindly advising us to sit at the back so we could watch our bags;-) and we made all of our connections smoothly and with ease - honestly the buses run ...
San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize gareth.alanna... of the sun in its eyes. (or they could have made their heads that shape for a more practical reason…to allow them to carry heavy objects using a strap around their forehead) There were also small pots which apparently would have been lined with paper and were used for blood letting – from a tongue or penis – it seemed that it was a privilege to let blood in this way… I’ll leave you guys to decide whether ...
San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize sarahelective... blamed the dirt on
his bad swing. I decided to wander around while we waited for our
veggie stirfrys. In behind the house, I found neat little blue crabs
that would scurry into the holes in the mud as I approached. If I
stood still long enough, they would come back out and cautiously sit
next to them, only to go back in once I was close again.
The food did not disappoint, we got a
big platter of stirfry to share. I asked for hot sauce, thinking ...
At about 2:45 this morning, I woke up suddenly, unsure why. I sleep with earplugs and sharing a house with 10 others, there is always a lot going on. I assumed someone had just woken up in the middle of the night and so I went back to sleep. The next morning, I woke up to find Heidi and Jamie talking about last night's EARTHQUAKE! I had no idea that was why I woke up. Annette and I were the only ones who hadn't gotten up, some of the girls never went back to sleep and were awake ...
San Ignacio, Belize sarainbelize... to do a cheaper activity in San Ignacio. I went to find some breakfast and found some of the group - Peter and Evanna - who were planning on visiting a local ruin. We caught a local bus towards the Guatemalan border and got off at San Jose. A hand-cranked ferry took us for free across the river. We walked the 1 mile (more like 2) up the hill to the Xunantunich ruins. The site had wide open grass plazas and several ...
San Ignacio, Belize danasv... the neighbours always celebrate something ....very loudly!! For such a remote place it seemed a little bizarre!! We had some breakfast and did some Iguana-spotting at the river before heading into town in a 'collectivo' taxi for 2bz
In the afternoon we went to Barton Creek Caves which is an underground water cave system. We went in canoes with a guide and with powerful spotlights. It is believed that the Maya once used these caves ...
... amazing part. Lara Croft would be so jealous! The great thing was that I had to this all the way back again. There was no helicopter waiting at the end. I asked the guide just in case. I am absolutely knackered and absolutely happy that I did this. It is my first time in caving adventure and it was so challenging and rewarding. So, on to Tikal tomorrow.

Belmopan, Belize hrpitschmann... into a streetside gutter. (I'm sorry to relate that unfortunate event to others Marieke, I hope you forgive me...it was kinda funny, but only because you weren't hurt). My first day in Belize with Marieke and her friend Natalie was pretty sweet. We grabbed some food and then headed to the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, located atop a large hill in San Ignacio. I was expecting some small ruins, maybe a couple buildings...but oh, was I wrong. Cahal Pech (literally- the place of ticks ...
Belmopan, Belize plastrro... searchlight. Getting into the cave was a bit tight as we had to brush up to a rock whilst bumping over rock on the bottom, but then it opened out to between 10 and 20 feet wide. We needed the lights because the ceiling is over 100 feet high in places. The cave is a living cave so there were lots of water drips coming down on us, but it was worth it to see some magic stalagmite and stalactite formations. Some of these where on the ceiling whilst ...
