Banjul, Gambia mrandmrsrontour... We had decorations, mince pies, presents, a tree, carols, even a recitation of "Twas the Night Before Xmas". A friend of mine offered to play Santa and we located a suit for him. He's not unattractive this boy, and thanks to a complete coincidence, every woman in the house happened to have business in the bedroom when he was changing into it. There was almost a scrum when he asked the crowd who wanted to sit on his knee. Some ...

If an assignment is actually given, very few of the 40 to 50 students who may or may not have their books and supplies actually understand as the teacher calls off the right answer during the 30 minute class. More than anything, these students seem to learn copying, and this "skill" seems to pervade everything they do. In art class, when told to use their ...

See lots of eagles and birds of all shapes and sizes, it only I was a twitcher! The bike is holding well, apart from a clicking pedal and seat post that doesn't allow for any height adjust, its doing just fine. Carpentry is very much the professing of choice near ...
Banjul, Gambia jnewcomb... necessarily efficient. This fact was especially disastrous when, after gaining independence, Gambians maintained the same basic form of autocratic government. Political theory was not thriving, and to many frustrated after colonialism, the changing of flags was a grand enough achievement. During this first republic, one of the few changes was the election of chiefs by village heads. In 1994, a peaceful military takeover took place that generated little resistance from the Gambian ...
Serekunda, Gambia mafoley... hooking him up to an IV, sending a spray of blood over him, his bed, and the IV. A mumbled apology was the only effort to remedy this situation, the blood remained to add some color to the otherwise gray room, and Bryan was left with a very sore hand. Actually, the unfortunate irony was that the shots and the fact that we caught the malaria early meant that for a bit the hand was the only pain he suffered too much of. The afternoon and evening passed by in monotony in the hospital ...
Senegambia, Gambia adminor... it like you do. It should be interesting to get to know some of them better. All in all, it was a good first week of classes...more beach trips, market trips, and exploring local bars and restaurants. Especially interesting was a trip to a local artist's house for tye-dying, which just happened to be a reconstructed African village. The entire place was a work of art, there is no other way to describe it. A mixture of traditional and modern art was everywhere, hanging from the trees ...
Serekunda, Gambia adminor... Señor Hart's previous final words to me on the subject of them visiting, had been the difficult-to-misinterpret "no bloody way" so it was clear Señora Hart had been doing some talking in the interim and with charming naivety I was determined that absolutely everything was to go strictly to plan during their stay. Despite a slight hitch at the airport (panic induced by i) their lack of appearance at the gate and ii) the realization that they had ...
Banjul, Gambia sweet2thlh... in The Gambia we also have our own "messenger boy" who cycles round delivering mail where it's needed as there is no postal service. It is a very friendly environment and we mostly eat breakfast together each day whilst arguing over items in the daily newspaper. Two of my colleague recently got married which was a lovely surprise to those of us working there, and I was lucky enough to attend the wedding.
