... in Kel’s handbag and an 11 hour flight (and numerous Qantas club free beers) under the belt (Ah, ****!). Safety first! Jo’burg drivers are ****ING CRAZY!!! Sure, I know its peak hour traffic (Get 10 million people. Add 10 million cars held together by nothing more than chewing gum, gaffa tape, random bits of wood and a good measure of rust. Take away all seatbelts. Use a licensing system based on the number of ...
Johannesburg, South Africa d_muzzo... to wait till I got to town. I then went in search of transport and found that taxis were crazy expensive in this place as they wanted $50 to get to my hostel. I heard though that my hostel would pick people up some times but needed change for the pay phone so had my first burger at this place called Wimpys which proved to be a lot more greasy than the picture looked. My hostel came to get me for $10 (still expensive) but it was ...
Johannesburg, South Africa mike_bright... she really considered the 400 steps when she suggested it as a must-see activity); · Spending a day enjoying Hong Kong Island. This included riding the series of escalators up to the Mid Levels. It's hard to capture in a photo, but it is fascinating to see kilometers of covered escalators being used as a daily commuting method for thousands of locals. We also played our role of "small town folk go to the big city" as we stood around and gawked up at ...
Johannesburg, South Africa elopfamily... It was such a fantastic experience to see these animals so up-close in their natural habitat. We drew up along side a pride of lions, two of which lay just a couple of metres from our trucks and that was incredible! They looked so peaceful & unaware of us, it almost lulled you into a false sense of security where by you forget how dangerous these animals are.
Back at camp, I soon realised that our group was an odd number & our tents were just two man tents ...
... a funicular halfway!!! We swore yet again to each other that we're joining the gym as soon as we get home! Cool animals we saw were a tribe of baboons including little babies which were the cutest things ever! Also a family of ostrichs, and some rock rabbits which live on rocks and their closest relatives are the elephants. We saw camels and southern wright whales too. The surrounding landscape was amazing, and there was never a moment with nothing to look at! We also stopped in ...
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa njbutlerAs always these days, I'm awakened by Bob Marley's Three Little Birds' "Don't worry about a thing" which is much needed today as my alarm springs into action at 6 am, a short hour after I fell asleep. Why??? I am up and out the door a few minutes later to meet up with Noah and his girlfriend to hike Lion's Head, a mountain overlooking the city of Cape Town. We ascend in the cool early ...
Johannesburg, South Africa madman96... Upper Class of course in a place called Orlando know as the Beverly Hills of Soweto. Some of the houses here are massive and very posh with expensive cars outside which was a stark contrast to the chip board and tin roof shacks across the road. We also visited the Hector Peiterson Museum, a young boy who got shot in the student protests in the 70's, and the Apartite Museum which has lots of information about apartite, how it came about and ...
Johannesburg, South Africa kristinafowler... doing a special valentines day dinner" Ryan and I glanced at each other in then stated in unison. "We are NOT gay." Not sure he believed us, as we did look pretty gay turning up for dinner on Valentines day. Anyway we decided to eat and had a lovely romantic valentines day dinner, however I declined on the candles and roses. It was while we were in the pub that Ryan told me a funny story. Apparently he was having a few problems with his staff a few months ago ...
Hoedspruit, South Africa olibray... like 38 degrees on some days that the outdoor pools felt like indoor heated ones! and not mentioning the @#$*ing mosquitos keeping us awake most of the night...everynight....we have the scars of the bites to prove it....(sadly this is not the last you will hear of these little critters!) Pilansberg, South Africa tashanddebs... another item on the way back to Jo'burg - my right shoe. In my quest to locate it people seemed more concerned with which shoe it was (right or left) rather than the fact I was missing one. I thought it had fallen out of my bag in the trailer but the bus driver denied it. I've been wearing them for the best part of a year now and they were falling apart so I decided I should just give in and replace them. I set off ...
