Chobe National Park

Botswana is a crazy combination of desert and delta. Nearly 40% is protected, kept wild and bursting with animal life. We found the locals to be friendly, food to be stew based and the climate to be dry and dusty. To explore Botswana and Namibia (since there is no public transport) we hired our own 4X4 in South Africa from a friend's, friend's(!) company, Bushlore. It came all set with roof tent, stove, fridge/freezer and even a shovel to dig ourselves out of trouble! Since we had no 4X4 driv...

Landie leads the way, day 3 in the wild

Last night I think the hippos were right next to the tent! We could hear them all night long along with lions! We heard later in the day from people who also camped there that they saw the lions in camp that morning but we missed them due to sleeping in (sleeping in here means 7am) J The same zebras I saw the afternoon before when we were setting up our camp, greeted me as I climbed out of the roof tent. They were about 50ft away eating grass.

After our own breakfast of some coffee and...

On to Savuti

We packed up early and made our way to our next camp at Savuti. It was a fairly boring and uneventful drive with hardly any wildlife. The sand on the road was very thick in places making it difficult to drive. Savuti Campsite is located next to the Savuti Park Rangers Post. The showers and loos at the campsite are very basic and protected by an elephant-proof embankment, an incredible structure that looks more like a nuclear bunker. Although elephant-proof it has been cleverly designed so tha...

SAFARI!!

... after 6. We quickly confirmed our reservation for the next morning game drive as well as the afternoon game drive before our buffet dinner. Dinner was good, but it was funny to see that Julie and I were the youngest ones in the restaurant. After dinner, Julie taught me how to play Rummy and we spent the rest of the evening playing Rummy.

Tomorrow we have our morning game drive. We need to be up by 5:30 to get ready and leave for 6am. So early!
Chasing Lions

... sped ahead. Taking the first left we pulled over then to wait and see where the lions might come out. The other trucks settled in behind and we all waited, and waited.

Then talking on the walkie talkie our driver began re-maneuvering, turning us around and causing the other drivers alarm; he was clearly one of the leaders. Then he pulled forward 20 feet or so and settled back again ...

Our scariest animal encounter, day 5 in the wild

... the direction of our campsite! As we drove closer to our 'home' we passed small pockets of them, but it felt ok since they were all very calm now and just eating. It's near dark now and we slowly drove to our spot and set up for dinner. Well within about 30 minutes the elephants regrouped and were now slowly marching through the bushes right next to our campsite, heading for the river. They had picked up some friends ...

The Chase

... at our jeep! They did swerve in time but it meant that once the lioness got bored (and therefore the lion as he had followed her as it seems he had only one thing on his mind and it wasn't the buffalo) they decided to sit down within metres of us and pose for a bit! Pretty exciting, and I was much more comfortable with the fact that they had come to us and chosen to sit near us than with the way so many of the jeeps had originally ...

How we ended up going to botswana

... us how they had gone to botswana on a two day safari and recommended it, so on this we decided to book it, and at only $200 it was very cheap comparable to many other safaris. We then we decided to go on a segway safari which was more for comedy value, you need to see the photos to understand. After lunch we then decided to go to victoria falls which is massive, it's about 80m high and over a mile long although you cant see the ...

African Safari

... hippos walking in the marsh in front of my cabin. After breakfast we started the game drives. This area of Botswana is a true oasis that is situated in the middle of the largest stretch of continuous sand in the world, the Kalahari basin. I visited four game reserves, Sandibe, Savute, Moremi and Chobe. My tour operator was CC Africa Expeditions. Several of the CC Africa Lodges have received international recognition for ...

Chobe National Park

... get very close to the fence...they are huge! The next day we got up very early to do a game drive in the national park. We managed to see a bunch of elephants before we even got in the park gates! The park runs right along the river. We saw lions, a ton of baboons, warthog, lots of different antelope, and hippos. From there we went back to the campsite to relax for a few hours before our afternoon river cruise ...
