Drakensberg Sani Pass Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, 27-33-7020203
After spending a few days in the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg we headed off for somewhere really different namely an isolated lodge near the border of Lesotho. The Sani Lodge, as it is called, is a beautiful little backpackers place in the mountains, about as high up as you can get without a 4x4. The only downside to this place in our opinion was regular powercuts - we spent a lot of the evenings in candlelight. We stayed at the Sani Lodge for two days and on the second one we went o...
Underberg, South Africa domjonna... you yourself believe you have (work, money etc), makes you realise there are people out there that have it x10 worse than you... unbelievable.

We got to go inside one of the houses, here we lived Marissa (?) who Murray explained she had had 14 children, which had two sets of twins and one lot of triplets at different stages. We got to see the small size of their homes, how the parents sleep on the raised sides of the home, then the children sleep on the ground on ...
Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa mbsteve... hooked, and stayed up watching episode after episode late into the night. The series is about a serial killer, and so by about 11 pm we were all completely terrified, and it seemed like a very dark and scary walk back to the Rondeval and a very lonely night. Garreth took pity on us, and let us know that 3 backpackers had cancelled so their was room in the lodge. He then offered to drive us back to our Rondeval to get our things. Once we were ...
Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa kickthrough... best meat. Sunday, we have a large roast chicken, with all the veggies. The AA saw fit not to make us a finalist in the AA accommodation awards. Even though we didn't make it to the finals, we are sooo chuffed to make it this far, being the first time we have ever entered something as big as this. We were also the only B&B in the Southern 'Berg to have got this far. Enough of this trumpet blowing! That's it for now. see ya
********************************* .....
Underberg, South Africa die_sunny... ladders to get to the very top. Nerve racking - an understatement! With white knuckles gripping on to the chains, no safety ropes, howling wind threatening to blow you off the rock face at any minute, and horrible backward and sideways angles to deal with - it was an achievement that will always be treasured - but not repeated. In fact, after Mount Sinai in Egypt, mountain climbing will definitely not stay on Greg and my 'To do list!'.
Drakensberg, South Africa fosters4... if your were the slightest bit accrophobic. That night we were the only guests at the lodge, so they served us dinner on our own balcony overlooking the valley and the white rhinos. It was more awesome service with the waiter popping up every few seconds to fill our glasses or offer some other service. we were joking around that they must have a little spy camera so they can tell when our wine glasses were only half full.
Sani Pass, Lesotho woolly... beating one of them ;-) I guess they let me. Next day I walked to a bus terminal, where I started talking to an older man sitting next to me. I told him I wanted to take a trip outside town, to a place called Wartburg. He responded, after conferring with his neighbour, that the minibuses to Wartburg only depart from the other side of the city. To make it short, I ended up paying for his minibus and went with him back ...
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa yfjell... cell phone reception) and towed the bike with my bike. (I went back to the house and got a rope.) However, after 5km or so, we met up with Vic and another friend Helen, who had driven up to give a hand. so we stopped to have a beer by a stream and contemplate our situation. That was when our saviour pitched up. Can't remember his name, but he saw our plight, went and got his bike ...
Underberg (Heimville), South Africa bonovasa... The owner, Ed, was a whole lot more friendly and helpful than the last place and when we mentioned we'd done the Amphitheatre hike alone he laughed and said, 'I bet the hostel wasn't too happy with that'. The room we got was fantastic, although it was a bit pricier ...
