Amazon Jungle (Peru)

AMAZON: After Maccu Piccu, we flew to Puerto Maldanado, a gateway town to the Amazon. An hour by motor boat, an hour hike, and a 30 minute canoe ride brought us to the Sandoval Lodge in the Tambopata Natural Reserve. We spend 3 days here checking out the jungle wildlfe: tarantulas, black caimen aligators, river otters, monkeys, and hundreds of types of birds and insects (not to mention the lush flora). We slept in mosquito net bearing beds without the luxury of electricity - not fun but this ...

Amazon forest

The forest awake exactly on sun rise filled with the noise of the cicadas. While brushing my teeth, I found a giant cock roach crawling on my wall. Guess it was too fat to crawl away. Fearing that it might fly into me, i made the best use of my slippers. An early morning canoe ride before breakfast was planned.

Night walk in the jungle

The night walk started at dusk. Equipped with my ultra bright flashlight from Walmart [quick aside, lumen level of the light should be required on all flashlight packaging. Most manufactures have it except for quality or should be say snobby brand Mag] we headed into the trails around the lodge. If you hate insects or any kind of crawling creatures, this is not your hike. I feel like The Crocodile Hunter. We shine our little light and camera up close on the creature -spiders, snakes, ants, mo...

Off to the jungle :-)

*****(yes, I have been busy. I have added 2 entries today and a **** load of photos. This update below covers the jungle.)****** 7 of us headed to the airport for our flight down to Puerto Maldonado (West of Cuzco). John, Tricia and I were going for 4 days (2 nights on the Heath River and 1 in Sandoval Lake Lodge) whilst Brad, Malena, Sandra and Mary were only going for 3 days (Sandoval Lake Lodge only). When I say óur flight down´ I really mean ´down´. Cuzco has an altitude of 3,400m and aft...

Andes to Amazon

A 30 minute flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado left behind an altitude of over 3000m and a temperature of 15c and bought us to an altitude of 200m above sea level and an altitude of 200m above sea level and an average temp of about 31c with 95% humidity!. The weather stayed the same for the 3 days we were there (which was extremely lucky as it is the middle of the wet season) but the moment we got back to the airport , the clouds came over, the heavens opened and we understood why it is ca...

Jungle Tour to Laguna Sandoval

Well, we´ve made it to La Paz where there is finally a fast, cheap internet connection, and I´m going to take a stab at recalling our Peruvian jungle trip, which actually took place between Tuesday, 8/29 and Friday, 9/1. You may recall that upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, our planned route into Bolivia turned out to be impassable/impossible. Even if we had been able to negotiate river passage with a cargo boat down the Rio Madre de Dios to Puerto Heath, Bolivia, there was still no road to c...

... and he did. The new trail emerged on another trail just where he said it would. It is pretty amazing how he does it. The whole trail including the walk to get to the start and back from the end is about 16kms and it took us about 9 hours to do the whole thing. Exhausting. I decided to tidy up another trail a coupld of days later and the combined macheteing efforts have left me with 3 very sore blisters on my right hand.

I am now half way through my jungle time and ...

Its a jungle out there...

... heads out and peering at us through the gap, snorting indignantly at our intrusion. Shortly after we took the boat back out on the lake for some bird watching and then back to the mammal colpa to check out the camera trap. As we arrived at the first colpa the noise of peccaries could be heard distinctly, possible at the next colpa along. As Jack has still not seen white lipped peccaries despite being here for 6 months this was something of an event and we all headed out in hot pursuit ...

Welcome to the Jungle...

... you cant see more than a few metres into the jungle most of the time. I was having trouble finding the next marker anyway so I decided to turn back and thought I would be going the opposite way to the peccaries and so avoid them. However I turned the corner and two crashed out of the forest to my left. I am not sure who was the most startled me or them! Luckily they ran off leaving me with a pounding heart listening to the massive group crashing away through the undergrowth ...

Ripped off at Tambopata

... the same and in the ******* rain there would probably be nothing out at the lake anyway. The difference between a good tour company and a poor company is the contingencies. No one can do anything about the rain but a good tour company is prepared for anything and would have an alternative. We were told ´have lunch get dry and this afternoon we will walk around the lodge´. They had nothing. The lodge is set in degraded forest, if it was good forest they would not be allowed here ...
