Colonial Quito and the Rainforest
The Radisson Hotel in Quito was an excellent choice in a great location. I would definitely recommend staying there. It is new, comfortable and has an excellent buffet breakfast. There is also free internet access so you can stay in touch with folks at home.

Ecuador - first stop the Jungle
After a fantastic stay in Peru it was time to move on to our final country, Ecuador. After one night in Quito (the capital) we flew early the next morning to Coca and then a 2.5hour journey by motor canoe, walking and finally paddle canoe to our lodge in the Amazon jungle - Sacha Lodge for 4 nights. The lodge is pretty luxury by jungle standards, …
Welcome to the jungle
We left Quito, flew over the Andes and down into the Amazon jungle. We arrived in Coca, a steamy oil town in the midst of the jungle. From there we caught a boat 80 km down the river and deep into the heart of the amazon jungle. We arrived at the shoreside and hiked through dense jungle before reaching the edge of a big lagoon. We then canoed …
In deep, up close and extremely fun
The paddle barely makes a sound as it dips into the dark water of the Napo River. It is a crystal clear night. The stars are twinkling in the black sky above us and reflecting perfectly in the glass-like river below our canoe. Looking from one end of the sky to the other, you can see the Milky Way splashed between the Southern Cross and the Big …
Rain forest in the Amazon
We had an amazing experience with a naturalist that was a nerd. Nerds are loveable. But what a better person to show you the birds, floral, trees and animals.
We went on a night walk to view various small insects and noctural birds. The lagoon caneo ride was breath taking because everyone in the boat found silence and peace as the sun set …

great way to truly experience the Amazon. Floating down the river, you miss too much. Here you get to fish, canoe, hike, bird, relax in the hammock, etc... you get the gist.

Getting there is half the experience ...air, river transport, hiking on a boardwalk over a mangrove swam and canoeing to the final destination. The rainforest setting is heavenly. It is peacefully located along "black" water so we didn't experience mosquitoes while at the lodge. The main building houses the reception area, a bar, lookout, and restaurant. The food was good, though not great. The cabins have no TVs or telephones. They do have hot and cold water with showers and facilities and a deck with hammock. You are out in the wilderness with the sounds of insects and birds and it is stunningly beautiful. There are hiking, boating, and fishing activities available plus visits to local Indian villages and to parrot salt licks. We would definitely stay there again and highly recommend it.
