        Behold, the source!

The lake itself is the same shape as Lake Como. Which is of no real relevance at all.

Landing on Lake Itasca was pretty exciting, it may only be the fifth day of the trip, but it felt like something momentous! Upon landimg I ...

The boat ride was great! We learn a lot about Lake Itasca's history and explorer Schoolcraft who discovered the start of the Mississippi. We saw some immature Eagles,Ospreys , and a pair of loons. One pair had their kids along. It was a nice way to spend two hours. Afterward, I ate at the lodge for lunch while Bud & Marilyn pedaled to the headwaters for more pictures and fudge of course. ...

... higher. Two years ago, when we went through here, the campground that we usually stay at, had a berm between it and the lake so the lake could no longer be seen from the campsite... Saw a billboard along hiway 2 that showed a picture of a headstone and the caption read 'buy this headstone now!'...that's something new! Up at 5am...which is 4am, Calgary time and over to the airport by 5:30...Josh, Mel and Bronwyn are taking off as I write this. We can see the airport from our parking spot...there they go.... When Ron came back we spent a couple of hours choosing to keep or jettison food, packing clothes, shoes, stuff....amazed at how we managed to get the car loaded....and, of course we have the canoe and bicycle on the roof of the car ...

Home of Paul Bunyan and Babe

We arrived before dark at the KOA campground just west of Bemidji, after crossing the very beginnings of the mighty Mississippi River that is a small creek here. The next day we met our next-site neighbours Bill and Karen Head from Winnipeg. After checking out, we drove into town where we saw the giant statues of Paul Bunyan (wearing a Shriner's fez) and Babe the Blue Ox, a little yellow submarine, and some fanciful statues made from scrap metal parts.
