      Saturday 27th September

Today we had a trip across the border into Cook County, Minneapolis and visited the pretty Lake side resort of Grand Marais. It's about 80 miles south along route 61 and took us about an hour and a half. I had to buy a 30 day visa at the border which cost $6.

Cook County is basically a 3,340 square mile national park. It's the place you ...

... the lake for a couple if hours. Calm seas greeted us with a gentle breeze cooling our faces as we paddled along the shore for several miles. A loon allowed us to drift within a few feet.

The girl at the campground desk had me outed she picked blueberries up by Seagull lake the other day and told us to look for an area where the granite sticks out of the ground. We passed several parked cars of blueberry pickets finally ...

Today was, as Winnie the Pooh might have said, a "very interesting day". Tis morning the campground was already clearing out by the time I woke up at 0630. Oddly, the campers at tis rally were so well mannered that they were able to get up, strike camp, and motor out without waking up folks sleeping feet from them. Very civil. Steve Price joined me for breakfast shortly after I got up, and got the "jet boil" going. I had volunteered to help with cleanup after the rally so I was in ...

From Duluth we continued north to Gooseberry Falls State Park. The falls are very easy to get to and you can climb all over them. Bring your suit if you want to get wet. From Gooseberry Falls we went to Split Rock Lighthouse. It is one of the more picturesque lighthouses you'll ever see. Too bad it was a bit overcast by then. The hike to the shoreline ...

The Long Drive to Grand Marais

A travel blog entry by cjsparks on Jun 29, 2011

We left the house by 4:30 am to start heading to Minnesota. We usually don't drive that far in one day but with the camper we didn't want to stop and set up camp twice. We made really good time and stopped at Betty's Pies outside of Two Harbors for lunch. We ate there last time we were on the North Shore and really liked it, Shared two big pieces of pie ...
