Stopping in Ohakune was supposed to be one of our highlights of travelling around the North Island. We landed here specifically to walk the Tongariro Crossing which traverses a couple of large volcanoes. It is regularly sited by a wide variety of guide books as being one of the top day walks anywhere in the world as the views across the volcanic landscape are supposed to be spectacular.
