Good bye South Island - I will always love you.

... I go into the wholly bagel one of the culinary wonders of New Zealand, along with steak & cheese pie and Tim Tam’s. Far ahead of chocolate fish or pineapple lumps of which they are inappropriately proud.
Anyway I go in and ask for:
A sesame bagel with Cream cheese and bacon, it may not be to your taste but it’s not complicated right?
So why, oh WHY! Does it turn up and have sauce, onions, lettuce and ...

... fog. Many absconded & although tempted to take the high road we stuck around roaring The power of Christ compels you. Lo & behold in under an hour we were singing Summer Is Icumin In as our blue sky returned, everything opened & we had an empty mountain virtually to ourselves. The mouthwatering scenery as always took the full brunt of our camera flashes. If the blagards had not denied us one more run we would still be there.

Soaked Through and No Views

Stopping in Ohakune was supposed to be one of our highlights of travelling around the North Island. We landed here specifically to walk the Tongariro Crossing which traverses a couple of large volcanoes. It is regularly sited by a wide variety of guide books as being one of the top day walks anywhere in the world as the views across the volcanic landscape are supposed to be spectacular. However, you know what they say about best laid plans and all that ...

Our water excursion on a River Jetboat

... a couple drinks in front of them. They chugged them and pushed them towards the bar tender a couple times while I made the reservation. There always seems to be gambling at the bars in NZ. Horse racing is big and money is being transfered between people frequently. The room was about 35 degrees F. The bed collapsed toward the center more than any bed I had ever slept in. The window did not lock and had ...

Disappointin' and Runnin'

... and placing it in the hot geothermal grounds - delish!! We continue on the bus to Tongariro National Park - one of New Zealands best one day hikes across a vast mountain pass. It's really unique for us today in that we see absolutely nothing. The rain is ******* down and visibility is reduced to about 5 feet. Still after a day of driving in the rain and disappointment we arrive at National Park Village and a hostel to rival all hostels - wood ...

Whanganui River Kayak Tour

... of this world, particularly when you reach the central crater and later the red crater, but you can better judge that from our picture album. In the end we took around 7 hours to complete the crossing, with many picture stops and a short lunch break, and despite all the people we enjoyed it very much, it was definitely one of the best, or even the best, walk we did during our entire trip. We could feel our legs and Eva was suffering from several blisters, but all that ...

Happy Campers

... time since he cycled 30km let alone 300km. We happily ignored him and kept all our stuff and decided 60-100km was fine. We ate out for dinner, in the only place open in town at about 8.30pm. We both had steak and we probably had about half a cow between us, but it was good and we enjoyed it before returning to our workman filled hostel (they were all lovely ) and slept well camping in the Garden. :)

Snowboarding

... old pro. I couldn't even master the tow rope which dragged you back up to the top of the slope, which is embaressing to say the least!! By lunchtime Emmet was ready to move up to the intermediate level and some proper slopes. I decided to stay where I was for another few hours. I was having visions of being airlifted out of the area in the westpac rescue helicopter and didn't think having a broken limb would work too well in a campervan. I was ...
