Osa Peninsula, Oh So Pretty!

... great photo opp and rest spot! We managed to find a jungle trail again and I was quite enjoying the cooler air when Alan once again said to me, "Stop and look over there!" Lying in front of us right on the path was the thickest, biggest snake. It was half curled up, half slithering away, probably at least 2 meters in length and light yellow and beige. It also looked like it was digesting something it had eaten a little while ago, by our estimations this thing looked like a boa. I ...

3 weeks of crazy

... the hike was all up mountain, but it was great. as we were walking i almost stepped on a slender hognose viper. which would have ended my trip through life, but luckly i saw it and jumped over it, but we poked it with a sticka nd i got a photo. now we are straight up bush whacking through the jungle and all i can think about are snakes. cause rummer has it that the 3rd person in line gets bit. the first one startles it and the second one it gets ...

Day # 10 Part 2 "Survival Tips for Tent Camp"

... coast, you will often find a new animal in the bathroom each time you visit. Some are common in hot climates, but at 5am, in the dark, when you need to pee it can be a bit of a surprise. The headcount on bathroom visits is: Several Geckos. Two types of leaf moth. Large crickets. Ants. Termites. Cockroaches, some of which are stripy and very large. Praying Mantises, one with a large flat head. Small tree frogs ...

Costa Rica and the Wild Corcovado

... has a covered shelter and running water. You sleep in a grassy area. It is very basic. La Sirena is far more luxurious being that it doubles as a research center and therefore has an elevated covered sleeping quarter and foam pad and a place to rinse down to go along with. A mosquito net and sleeping bag would be ideal if you don't have a tent. When we were the there the weather was perfect. If you can, stay at least three nights, four being the maximum and in my opinion the most worthwhile.

When's My Departure?

... want to bring some of your items by to sell, feel free. I just found a really *****in' framed poster of 2 shiny yellow big rig cabs, which could go for some big $$$. Anyway, the final crew list is three: KimO, Mick McCowen (who is not returning to the United States, but going home to England, or so he claims), and Javier Cano (who lives in Costa Rica). Schooner is (probably) going to stay in Laguna for a few months because he will probably ...

Will Make Departure (from Golfito)

... leg because some people convinced her a sailboat was no place for a 22-month-old. Whatever. But we had reconnected earlier in the year with her old roommate and friend, Javier, who happened to have nothing going on that week and offered to come. Now Javier is a brilliant person to have on board ...

seeing new places!!

so, since our adventure to the waterfalls, the girls and i have been travelling to new and exciting places. we decided to head down south, farther than i have been yet. so we jumped on a bus and made our way to Quepos, which is mostly just a little fishing town and not much of a beach, so we didn't even spend the night there. we hailed ourselves a taxi, after grabbing frozen twix bars and pringles...of course, and took the twisty yet short ...

... do research. One of our resource people who joined us there also works on adaptive radiations in plants, and was very good to talk to and very helpful. She also happened to live in the same apartment that I lived in in St. Paul. It is a very small world. Here my independent project was on anolis lizards, and trying to understand the role that their dewlap (neck ornamentation) has in male male communication. I worked with another student, Alexis ...

Still in Golfito

... have grown up in cities) I love nature - but as something to visit and enjoy and not necessarily live in. It's like an amusement park - you go and enjoy the rides but you don't move into the Big Dipper or the Haunted House. I was sick of sharing my cabin with lizards, spiders and cockroaches. I was sick of dowsing myself with DEET. Give me the artificial, smog-ridden, high pressure life of a city any day - with strategically timed escapes ofcourse.
